Several Gaines Chapel AME Church members opened the kitchen and their hearts Saturday, December 9, as they provided lunch for all who would come. For the homebound, meals were delivered.

Urla Boggan, one of the organizers and president of the church’s Lay Ministry, said this is the second time the church has provided community lunches. Last time, members held a fish fry and invited everyone to come and eat. This time, the plates included fried chicken and ham and sides.

The community lunches are only one of Gaines Chapel’s outreach programs.

Along with meals Saturday, the Lay Ministry members made and delivered gift baskets filled with food and personal items for the elderly and shut-in.
The Women’s Ministry adopted two Atmore Nursing Center residents to make sure they are not forgotten at Christmas. Last year, the ladies made more than 30 lap robes for patients at the local dialysis center.

“We just like to do things for the community,” Urla said. “Isn’t that what we’re called to do – to serve and to take care of others.”
