Alabama State Troopers continued this week their investigation into Sunday’s hit-and-run of a pedestrian who was struck while walking or standing along a street just outside Atmore.
Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reports show that “on Sunday, October 30, at approximately 7:27 p.m., troopers with (ALEA’s) Highway Patrol Division responded to a crash that involved a pedestrian.”
Troopers also reported that “the pedestrian was struck by an unidentified vehicle that did not stop at the scene.”
The unidentified pedestrian, reportedly a woman, was taken by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital. Her condition could not be confirmed by Tuesday’s press deadline, but unconfirmed reports are that the victim remained hospitalized as midweek approached.
The crash occurred on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, near Johnson Street.
City police, city firemen and MedStar medics were initially dispatched to the location shortly after 7 p.m. when dispatchers received reports of the incident.
Police Chief Chuck Brooks said Sunday that the incident actually happened outside Atmore’s municipal boundaries, so the investigation into it was turned over to state police.
“This occurred on MLK Drive, outside the city limits,” Brooks said. “ALEA is working the scene.”
A source within the state law enforcement community said no witnesses had come forth by late Monday, leaving troopers with “no clues” as to the color, make or model of the car that hit the pedestrian.
According to Alabama Criminal Code, leaving the scene of an accident with injury is a Class C felony, punishable upon conviction by a prison sentence of 1-10 years and a fine of up to $15,000.
