News Staff Report
Betty Warren, retired local educator and director of the city swimming pool at Tom Byrne Park for the past 51 years, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch this Saturday, June 11, when Atmore’s police and fire departments continue their annual rivalry on the softball diamond.
The Battle of the Badges Charity Softball Game, which pits the Atmore Fire Department Plug Uglies against the Atmore Police Department Road Runners, is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the softball fields adjacent to the park.
Tickets are $5 per person for adults, with children ages 12 or younger admitted free. All proceeds will go to Escambia County’s The Forgotten Initiative, a nonprofit that focuses on foster children and foster families.
City firefighters will be trying to avenge last year’s 26-19 setback to the policemen.
Atmore City Councilman Chris Harrison and Escambia County High School assistant football coach Raymond Robinson will be the guest umpires.
