An Atmore man was killed early Friday, April 19, when he apparently lost control of his 2010 Mercury Milan, left U.S. 31 and crashed into a tree.
Alabama State Troopers reported that 34-year-old Derrel D. Williams lost his life in the single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:31 a.m.
The fatal crash occurred near U.S. 31’s 34-mile marker, approximately seven miles south of the Atmore city limits, just across the Baldwin County line.
Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department personnel were first on the scene but turned the wreck response over to Perdido Volunteer Fire Department since the wreck was inside Baldwin County.
Trooper reports indicate that Williams was fatally injured when the vehicle he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree. Reports show that Williams was not using a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
About 90 minutes prior to the crash that claimed his life, Williams was stopped by Atmore police and issued several citations.
“He was pulled over in reference to the vehicle displaying a switched tag,” Sgt. Darrell McMann said. “He was issued citations for driving with a suspended license, no valid insurance, and switched tag.”
Funeral arrangements for the local man had not been completed by Tuesday’s press deadline.
