James Hoyt Coon

Coon

Mr. James Hoyt Coon, age 84, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023. He was born in McCullough, Ala. to William Alvin Coon and Frances Turk Coon. He attended Lottie Baptist Church. He was an Auto Mechanic but his passion was his wrecker service. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing and PBR bull riding.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Larry Coon and Dale Coon Fiveash.

Mr. Coon is survived by his wife, Sarah Hardy Coon; his children, Debbie (Brett) Beck of Destin, Fla., Pam Magee of Orange Beach, Ala. and Cris (Marc) Owens of Old Texas, Ala.; his siblings, Sharlett (Fred) Peevy of McCullough, Thelma (Wayne) Price of Pulaski, Tenn. and Jessie “Hootie” Myrick of Goodway, Ala.; his grandchildren, Whitney (Matt) Byrd, Caleb Beck, Chloe Beck, Marcus Owens, Cameron Beck and Matthew Owens.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Chris Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Barbara Jean Hoehn Roberts

Mrs. Barbara Jean Hoehn Roberts, age 82, a resident of Mobile, Ala., passed away Monday, September 18, 2023. She was born December 8, 1940 in Atmore, Ala. where she was raised. She was a graduate of Escambia High School in Atmore. She was a member of Mercy Life of Alabama and attended St. Robert Catholic Church in Atmore for many years. She loved anything Elvis, going to the beach, and Alabama football.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Roberts and her parents, John Alfonse Hoehn and Francis Elizabeth Hoehn.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her sons, Tommy Allen Mixon and Timothy Richard Mixon, both of Lillian, Ala. and John Allen Mixon of Pensacola, Fla.; her daughter, Barbara Jean Roberts of Huntsville, Ala.; her sisters, Helen Taylor of Fairhope, Ala. and Ann Staff of Atmore; numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews; many other loving relatives and friends.

Further arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be announced later.

Margaret Ann Colbert

Ms. Margaret Ann Colbert, age 69, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, September 18, 2023 in Birmingham, Ala. She was born in Claiborne, Ala. to Ed Taylor and Hattie Pritchett Taylor. She was a firm believer in hard work. She had a passion for taking care of others which showed in her forty-year nursing career.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Ricky Taylor, Roy Taylor, Jimmy Ray Taylor, Nan Taylor Nelson and Leon Taylor.

Ms. Colbert is survived by her daughter, Haley (Dempsey) Rolin of Poarch, Ala.; her grandchildren, Braxton Cohen Harrison and Bryleigh Grace Rolin; her siblings, Larry (Barbara) Taylor of Hot Springs, Ark., Dwaine (Betty) Taylor of Fulton, Miss., James E. Taylor and Richard (Rene) Taylor, all of Atmore, Ala., Terry (Mary) Taylor of Hearne, Texas, Debbie King of Bay Minette, Ala., Elizabeth (Jim) Chandler of Daphne, Ala. and Delilah (Henry) Haire of Jay, Fla.; many nieces and nephews affectionately known to them as “Aunt Nancy”.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Sister Helen Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Old Salem Cemetery in Mexia, Ala.

Active pallbearers will be James Wesley “Boolie” Colbert, Cecil Wayne Colbert, Henry Haire, Jay Chandler, Ronald Rolin and Rodney Stewart.

Mark Randall Boyington

Mr. Mark Randall Boyington, age 48, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023 in Mobile, Ala. He was a member of Flomaton Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was employed with Wind Creek Casino for thirteen years and the past four years with the Poarch Creek Indian Gaming Commission.  His life was filled with family, faith and love. He was a very avid Alabama Football Fan “Roll Tide”. He liked going fishing, shopping, going to yard sales and the thrift stores. He was a mama’s boy and her nickname for him was “Rudy”.

He was preceded in death by his father, O’Neal Boyington; one brother, Danny Boyington; one sister, Racheal Reeves; grandfather, Roil Hadley; two grandmothers, Dottie Burdick and Pearl (Hayward) Boyington and grandparent’s in-law, Charles (Claudeen) Kimmons.

Mr. Boyington is survived by his mother, Imogene Boyington, of Atmore, Ala.; his loving wife of six years, Britney Boyington of Atmore; one son, Dustin Boyington, of Atmore; three daughters, Alyssa Gordon and Kathleen Boyington, both of Atmore and Stormi Boyington of Bay Minette, Ala.; two brothers, Rodney (Becky) of Lottie, Ala. and Jimmie (Michelle) Boyington of Atmore; three sisters, Ester (Doug) Smith, Linda (Dewayne) Salter and Lisa Garrick, all of Atmore; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Flomaton Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Al Bethea and Rev. Kathy Chavers officiating. Burial will follow at Lottie New Home Cemetery.

Bessie James Dees

Mother Bessie James Dees, age 93, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023. She was born in Hope Hull, Ala. to the late Ike and Lillie James. She was a housewife/caretaker and later was employed twenty years at the Escambia County High School as a cafeteria worker. She was a faithful member for sixty-plus years at Saints With a Vision A.F.M. Church of God serving as Mother of the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her children, Patricia Geraldine, Allen Jr., Alvin, Calvin (Deese), Doris Jean Mosley and Brenda Brewster; her siblings, Ike, Joel, Warren, Thomas, Savannah, Mabel Lee James; granddaughters, Felecia Wiggins, Latiana Deese Richardson and Christina Phillips, Rodney America.

Funeral service were held Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Noon at Saints with a Vision AF&M Church of God – Atmore with Min. Anthony Brown – Pastor, presiding, Bishop Donice Brown – eulogist and Bishop Russell Fountain – Presider. Retirement of her remains followed in Fairview Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday, September 22, 2023 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Viola Jean Nichols

Mrs. Viola Jean Nichols, age 79, a lifelong resident of Flomaton, Ala., passed away peacefully in Pensacola, Fla. Monday, September 25, 2003. She was born in Flomaton to Louis and Fannie Hobbs Emmons. She enjoyed traveling with her husband visiting various countries around the world. She also enjoyed going to church, fishing and going to various casinos.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Cournel, “CJ” Emmons.
Mrs. Nichols is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, Lee Edward Nichols of Flomaton; one brother-in-law, David L. (Janice) Nichols of Wilmer, Ala.; five nieces, Linda Mylan and Nancy Evans, both of Flomaton, Marty Rolin of Atmore, Kim (Nolan) Lorenzano of Molino, Fla., and Lisa (Andre) Boykin of Pensacola; one nephew, Jay (Teresa) Wesley of Atmore.

Peggy Sue Couch

Mrs. Peggy Sue Couch, age 75, passed away Monday, September 25, 2023 in Atmore, Ala. She was a native of the Poarch Community and a proud member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indian, where she served three terms on the Tribal Council. She enjoyed traveling with family to  the mountains and Nevada. She liked quilting and wood working, specially building cabinets. She enjoyed watching the Hallmark channel and canning food. She really liked Christmas, such as making Christmas stockings and candy. She always was there to help people in need.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Buster Eugene (Bessie Mooneyham) Rolin; husband, Harold McElhaney; three brothers, Donnie Eugene Rolin, Earnest Dean Rolin and Harvey James Rolin.                                                                                             

Mrs. Couch is survived by her four sons, Tinker (Tasha) Rolin of Poarch, Ala., Johnny Ray Steadham of Booneville, Ala., Bryan (Linda) Couch of Atmore, Danny (Tammy) Couch of Franklinville, N.C.; seven brothers, Roy Rolin, Kenneth Wayne Rolin, Shawn (Stephanie) Rolin, Johnny Mack Rolin, all of Poarch, Walter (Anita) Rolin of Gulf Shores, Ala., Anthony (Jennifer) Rolin of Century, Fla., Deno (Necole) Rolin of Lottie, Ala.; two sisters, Virginia “Bell” Godwin of Poarch and Tonya (Wesley) Rayborn of Atmore; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; a very special sister-in-law, Diana Rolin of Poarch and other relatives and friends.
