Sandra Faye Mason

Mrs. Sandra Faye Mason, age 76, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, May 30, 2022 peacefully at her home with her family at her bedside. She was a lifelong resident of Atmore. She worked at Escambia Farm and Seed for many years and several more years for Diamond Gasoline and Dr. Frances Delaine Salter. She enjoyed cooking, going to church, and playing Bunco with friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Herman (Carrie Smothers) Phillips; Sandra Faye Mason husband, Benny Mason; one infant daughter and one sister, Patricia Wooten.

Mrs. Mason is survived by her two sons, Josh (Sirissa) Mason of Grand Bay, Ala. and Judd (Michelle) Mason, of Atmore; one brother, Rodney “RP” Phillips of Huxford, Ala.; three grandchildren, Michael Shawn Mason, Kari Nicole Mason and Jarren Matthew Mason; one great-grandchild, Aidan Reese Caraway; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC with Dr. Larry Beauchamp officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, June 3, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Pallbearers will be Steven Wooten, Joey Coker, Kenny Coker, Quence Caraway, Joshua Milstid, and Brad Adams.

Charles Kendrick

Mr. Charles Kendrick, age 76, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in Mobile, Ala. He was born in Garland, Ala. and resided most of his life in Atmore, Ala. He loved fishing, planting and working his vegetable garden, along with cutting grass and cleaning. He was a people person, and never met a stranger. He enjoyed life, laughing and his love for music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Lila Johnson) Kendrick; two brothers, Robert Kendrick, Calvin Kendrick; two sisters, Jeanette Sells, and Carol Ann Melvin.

Mr. Kendrick is survived by his three brothers, John Kendrick of Bay Minette, Ala., Melton (Rhonda) Kendrick of Atmore and David (Kristie) Kendrick of Foley, Ala.; four sisters, Faye (Billy) Owens of Silverhill, Ala., Mary (Tony) Pizzotti, of Fairhope, Ala., Ann (Pete) Nelson of Daphne, Ala. and Billie Ann Edwards of Atmore.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022, at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC with Bro. Tony Sells officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Pallbearers will be Travis Kendrick, Austin Kendrick, Brendon Kendrick, Larry Paul, Dalton Cluck, and Brian Davison.

David Solomon Garrard 

Garrard

David Solomon Garrard, age 63, of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Monday, May 30 in Pensacola. He was born in Atmore, Ala. to the late John and Fonda Solomon Garrard, Jr. David was a proud member of Escambia Academy’s Class of 1977. He went on to Auburn University where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing.  He owned and operated a successful landscaping company in Birmingham. His landscaping business led him into the field of real estate in which he obtained his real estate license and became a Realtor. He enjoyed showing and selling houses, and often became close friends with his clients. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking and experimenting with new recipes. He had most recently developed a love for traveling and was looking forward to his next adventure.  For the last several months, David served as Sexton at St. Francis of Assissi Episcopal Church in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Michael “Mike” Garrard. 

Mr. Garrard is survived by two nieces, Kelly (Russell) Howard of Allen, Texas and Lori Beth (Michael) Diller of Walnut Hill, Fla.; nine great-nieces and nephews, as well as a dear friend, Robert Craker of Pensacola, FL, who was instrumental in David’s life the last eight years. 

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at Oakhill Cemetery with Reverend Dr. Margaret Shepard officiating. The date and time will be announced soon.

Brenda Lee Gardner

Mrs. Brenda Lee Gardner, age 61, of Poarch, Ala., passed away June 4, 2022 in Pensacola, Fla. She was born 1 in Atmore, Ala. to the late Robert Lee and Helen Ruth Lambert Gipson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Taneka Sheree Johnson and her brother, Donnie J. Gipson. 

Mrs. Gardner is survived by her husband, Wesley Gardner; her daughters, Amanda (Scott) Flowers of Mexia, Ala. and Emily Godwin (Austin Risher) of Little River, Ala.; her brother, Robert Jessie (Mary) Gipson of Atmore; her sisters, Deborah Maples of Goodway, Ala. and Shana (Mark) Ellis of Dadeville, Ala.; her grandchildren, Ashton Flowers, Raiden Risher, Chase Flowers and Emma Risher. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Joe Gibson officiating. Interment will follow at Serenity Gardens in Atmore, Ala. 

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 9, 2022 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Michelle Baldwin Van Pelt

Michelle Baldwin Van Pelt, 61, passed away on Friday June 3, 2022 in Orange Beach, AL. She was born in Mobile, AL on January 7, 1961 after navigating Senior Bowl traffic. She is proceeded in death by parents Michael & Carmeleita Baldwin

She is survived by her husband George T. (Tommy) Van Pelt Jr., children Caroline Gardner (Levi), Michael Van Pelt (girlfriend Elizabeth Hartzog), two precious granddaughters Merritt Carmelita Gardner and Hazel Santure Gardner, two sisters Deborah Baldwin Kalifeh (Paul) of Daphne, Carmelita Baldwin Sipple (John) of Point Clear, and many nieces and nephews Paul Kalifeh II of San Francisco, Amanda Francis of Montrose, Monica Kurth of Daphne, and Michael Starr of Aurora, CO.

Michelle graduated in 1979 from Robertsdale High School. She was involved in many activities such as cheerleading & Homecoming Queen. Michelle continued her first-year education at Springhill College and graduated from Auburn University in 1983 with a degree in International Trade and Foreign Languages with her emphasis in German. While at Auburn she was a member of Chi Omega social Sorority and a Sigma Phi Epsilon little sister.

Michelle married Tommy Van Pelt in 1984 and moved to the Van Pelt family farm in Walnut Hill, FL and eventually Orange Beach, AL. She and her family enjoyed the United Methodist Church, boating, great friends and neighbors, and cruising to Pirate’s Cove.
Visitation will be held at Mack Funeral Home in Robertsdale on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with a graveside service to follow at 2:45 PM at Belforest Catholic Cemetery (located on Co Rd 64 6-1/2miles west of Loxley, AL)

Betty Jean Walton Jones

Mrs. Betty Jean Walton Jones, age 84, of Brewton, Ala., passed away Saturday, May 28, 2022.  She was born to the late Wilbert “Willie” Walton and Clara Howard Walton. She attended school in Conecuh County. She was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. She loved to sing, cook and was the greatest entertainer ever.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Marvin Earl Jones; grandson, Isaiah Carlisle; great-great-grandson, Kingston Holder; seven  brothers, Curtis “Mack” Walton, Robert Walton, Roy Walton, Wilbert Walton, Henry Lee Walton, James C. Walton and Jeppie Walton; one sister, Shirley Walton Dukes and daughters-in-law, Edna Jones and Mary R. Lee.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her children, Cherry (Jimmy) Dixon, Brenda (Joseph) Lindsey, Willa (Hernan) McClain, Evelyn (Irving) Carlisle, Willie (Pamela “Pam”) Jones, Johnny Ray Jones, Harvey Jones, Dewayne Jones, James Jones and Tim (Agusta) Jones; sister, Gloria Richardson of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; brother, Andrew (Gwendolyn (“Gwen”) Walton of Brewton; sisters-in-law, Thelma Walton, Lucille Walton and Claraleen Green; special nieces, Valerie (Anderson) Tolbert and Jacqueline Rankins; special friends, Lonnie Garnett and Elaine Jackson; thirty-two grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Christ Kingdom Ministry Center with Bishop Herman Bradley, Pastor, Pastor Stanley Stallworth, Presiding Pastor, St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church. Interment followed at Greater Nazarene Cemetery, Nymph Community.

Active pallbearers were Labarron Dees, Travontay Dixon, Lonnie Garrett, Fabrice Jones, Bryson Locke, Karrish Jones.

Flower bearers were her granddaughters.

Era Smith

Ms. Era Smith, age 82, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, June 4, 2022 in Omaha.

Brenda Wade

Mrs. Brenda Wade, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Sunday, June 5, 2022 in Atmore.
