‘Edible Eight’ to ‘Flavorful Four’

Special to Atmore News

Atmore’s Gather restaurant has earned its way into the “Flavorful Four” round of the Bama’s Best Tomato Dish Contest.
The contest is sponsored by Sweet Grown Alabama, a nonprofit foundation that enhances marketing opportunities for Alabama farmers by connecting retailers and consumers to Alabama-grown foods and other agricultural products.
Gather’s The Train Wreck — a meal of pimento grits, green tomato, bacon, Conecuh crab sauce and egg — joins Claunch Café in Tuscumbia, FDL Gourmet to Go in Montgomery and The Wildflower Café in Mentone (each of which advanced on the strength of its Tomato Pie) as a finalist in the statewide contest.
Votes were cast on Sweet Grown Alabama’s Facebook page and Instagram stories. Others who were nominated include The Avenue Pub in Tuscaloosa, The Downtown Chief in Gadsden, Walters’ Gas & Grill in Society Hill, and Walton’s Southern Kitchen in Huntsville.
Judges will taste-test each nominated dish, and the winner will be announced later this summer.
Each of the Flavorful Four will receive plaques, with the winner also receiving a cash prize, features in Neighbors magazine and on Simply Southern TV, and bragging rights.
