Man, 73, charged after tries to run down policeman, rams APD unit

A 73-year-old Atmore man was charged Wednesday (Feb. 24) with attempted murder after he tried to run down a city police officer with his car as an incident at a local bank escalated into a chase into Florida.

Police Chief Chuck Brooks reported that Lem Roy Sanders is charged locally with one count each of attempted murder and attempting to elude law enforcement.

Officers were sent to United Bank’s West Nashville branch, where bank employees reported that a “disorderly” man refused to leave the establishment.

When officers approached Sanders, who was in his car in the bank parking lot, he “sped away, almost hitting an officer.” Police pursued the man into Florida, where he pulled into the Davisville Piggly Wiggly parking lot
Sanders reportedly struck an unmarked APD unit before officers were able to break the driver’s side window of his vehicle and take him into custody.

He has been charged in Florida with three counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.
