Failure to appear leads to more charges

An Atmore woman who failed to show up for a court appearance to answer several charges against her, found herself behind bars, facing another charge.
Capt. Billy Blair of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office reported last week that Whitney Long, 19, was arrested June 20 on a bench warrant after she failed to appear in court on charges of theft of property, giving false information to law enforcement officers and possession of a controlled substance.
Blair said that when Long was processed into the Escambia County Detention Center, jail officers discovered a “meth pipe” hidden in her clothes, leading to a new charge of third-degree promoting prison contraband.
The new charge is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable upon conviction by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $3,000.
An employee of the county jail’s booking and release division reported that Long was eventually released on $5,000 bond.
