Person sought who shot, killed Atmore man

Escambia Co. Sheriff’s Office investigators are still looking for the person or persons who shot and killed a 20-year-old Atmore man Wednesday night (April 26).

The victim has been identified as Donta Demorris Russell of a Patterson Street address.

According to a press release issued by ECSO Chief Deputy Mike Lambert, deputies were sent to an address on Martin Luther King Drive around 10:16 p.m. after a caller reported a possible domestic disturbance that included gunshots.

Deputies arrived to find a Crown Victoria that was partially off the road and in a yard, resting against a tree, with a male driver who appeared to the only occupant of the vehicle.

Lawmen noted “obvious gunshot wounds” to the driver. An ambulance and an Atmore Fire Department unit responded, but medics pronounced Russell dead at the scene.

County detectives are trying to determine who might have shot and killed Russell. Anyone who might have information related to the case is urged to call 251-809-2154 or visit escambiacountysheriffal.org and leave an anonymous tip.

The shooting death is Atmore’s first homicide of 2017.
