PCRC honors Dr. King

The Progressive Civic and Recreational Club honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a service Sunday, January 15, at Power Pentecostal Holiness Church. This was the 31st annual observance of the day set aside to honor the civil rights leader.

The theme was “The Hour Has Come.” Scripture was John 13:1 – “Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.”

Robert White presided over the service. Congregational songs were “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “We Shall Overcome,” both directed by W.J. Grissett. Other music included a selection by the Power Pentecostal Choir and a solo by Robert White.

Participating in the program were Delois Gandy – Welcome; Barbara Poole-Harris – Occasion; Fannie Rivers – reading of “I Have a Dream”; Mildred Poindexter – performance of “Negro Mother”; Herbert Payne – introduction of pastor and Expression.

The message was brought by the Rev. Dr. Monroe Tucker of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Members of the Program Committee were Chairman Herbert Payne, Annie Poole, and Cornell Torrence.

PCRC officers are President Herbert Payne, President-Elect Robert White, Secretary Barbara Poole-Harris, Treasurer Alfred Johnson, Chaplain Fannie Rivers, Parliamentarian Frank Jones, Historian Robin Kidd, Board Members Delois Gandy, Cornell Torrence, Annie Poole, Ruby White and Geraldine Jefferson.
