Two Brewton men — one imprisoned for burglary and the other for violating the Sex Offenders Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) —were denied parole during recent hearings by the Alabama Board of Pardons & Paroles.
Darryl Peterson, 37, has been behind bars for almost seven years, including 201 days in the county jail. He was sentenced to serve 20 years after his conviction on two counts of third-degree burglary, one count of breaking and entering an automobile and one count of first-degree theft.
Currently housed at Fountain Correctional Facility, his minimum release date without pardon or parole is August 10, 2035.
The other area inmate whose parole request was rejected is Fred Bonam, who was arrested by Brewton police in 2020 for SORNA violations. He was found guilty and sentenced to serve 15 years.
Bonam, already a registered sex offender, was arrested by Brewton police in 2019 and charged with one count each of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and first-degree sodomy of a minor.
He has served three years and almost five months of the sentence, including 370 days in the county jail. He has also accumulated 2,110 days (almost six years) of “good time.”
Bonam was sentenced in 1985 to 9 years in prison, but was released after serving just under three years, during which he accumulated more than six years of “good time.”
He is currently housed at Kilby Correctional Facility. His minimum release date without pardon or parole is February 15, 2024.
