As the athletes got off the buses and headed toward the gym, cheers went up. Volunteers lined the walkway and applauded and sometimes exchanged a high five with athletes.
It was Friday morning, April 21, and excitement was high was athletes from the public schools in Escambia County gathered at Escambia County High School Cornell Torrence Gym for Super Fun Day (a special day for a special population of students).
Of course, the ECHS athletes didn’t have to ride a bus; they just walked over to the gym, and once they were inside, they were met with the same cheers and applause.
Athletes participated in a number of events including wheelchair race, ball throw, frisbee distance and accuracy, rice find, gym run, bowling, toss ‘em and an art activity for all. Eighth-grade gifted students manned the art station.
Volunteers included Coastal Alabama Community College (CACC) nursing students, two nursing instructors, and their softball team and coach from Brewton; two administrative staff members from CACC Atmore campus; Alabama Power Company; and the Escambia County Middle School Future Business Leaders of America and their advisor.
WoodmenLife volunteers worked the concession stand and provided sports drinks for athletes. Sizemore Creek supplied water for all.
