Demolition begins

Crews from Pitts Dozier Service in Brewton began last week demolishing the remains of First Presbyterian Church of Atmore (FPC). The local house of worship was effectively destroyed March 15 when lightning struck it, igniting a blaze that required more than 40 firefighters from seven area agencies to bring it under control. Larry Houk, a church elder, said the demolition and removal of debris will take two-to-three more weeks, weather permitting. The timeline for starting the church rebuild has yet to be determined, he said. Meanwhile, FPC is holding Sunday services in the former McRae Street Methodist Church building.
