Countywide cleanup

The Escambia County Commission is looking for a few good men. Or women. Or teens.
Commissioners are again teaming up with Alabama PALS (People Against a Littered State) for a weeklong countywide cleanup. The effort is designed to provide an outlet for county residents to get rid of numerous old or damaged items without paying landfill fees and to help rid the ditches along county highways of accumulated litter.
The anti-litter campaign began Monday (April 21) and will continue through Saturday, April 26.
Dumpsters have been provided at five locations across the county, although there are some restrictions on what can be put into them.
Those who use the receptables are asked not to dump tires, electronics, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, ballasts, paint, or household garbage in them. Dumpsters will be provided at the end of the week — from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. this Saturday, April 26 — for most of these items (see locations below).
The dumpsters currently in place:
*351 Jack Springs Road, Atmore (County Shop)
*22475 Hwy 31, Flomaton Firehouse
*13533 Hwy 29, Boykin / Damascus (County Shop)
*3251 Pea Ridge Road, Brewton (County Shop)
*Springhill-Ridge Road, East Brewton
Tires, electronics, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and ballasts will be accepted only on Saturday at all those locations except the one in East Brewton. Those disposing of these items are urged to follow the instructions of personnel, since such material must be placed into special dumpsters.
Commissioners are still seeking volunteers to assist in this effort. The county will provide garbage bags and sign-up sheets for volunteers. Anyone interested in helping out should stop by the county engineering office at 1 Henderson St, Suite 4, Brewton, or to contact his or her commissioner by phone at the following numbers: District 1, Steven Dickey (251-363-6227); District 2, Raymond Wiggins (251-238-1409); District 3, Larry White (251-538-0472); District 4, Brandon Smith (251-359-4493) or District 5, Karean Reynolds (251-253-1506).
