MLK events set

The Concerned Citizens of Atmore is gearing up for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. prayer breakfast, parade, and memorial service.
This year’s theme is “Unity in the Community. Brotherly love is the strongest advocate for freedom, peace and justice for all.”
Grand marshals are George Knott and NAACP Alabama State Conference Executive Director James Averhart.
The schedule of events is as follows:

  • Prayer breakfast – Thursday, January 16, 8:30 a.m., David’s Catfish House. Scheduled speakers are James Averhart and Karean Reynolds. The public is invited and asked to RSVP by Jan 14 to 251-294-0138 or 251-253-1818. The charge for breakfast is donations only.
  • Parade and memorial program – Monday, January 20. Parade line-up is 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Houston Avery Park, with the parade rolling at 10 a.m. Pick up application and guidelines at the Unity House, 313 N. Main Street, Atmore, or call 251-294-0138 or 251-253-1818. You may call Atmore RhoXi Sigma Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at 251-253-1506 or 251-253-1543. The completed form must be returned to the Unity House by Saturday, January 18, noon to 5 p.m. The best float receives a $300 prize.
    The Memorial Program follows the parade at 11:30 with guest speaker James Averhart. (Location not provided at this time.)
