Duffie Newton Wells

Mrs. Duffie Newton Wells, age 94, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2024 in Century, Fla. She was a native of Byrneville, Fla. and life-long resident of Century. She was a faithful member of Bethel Temple Holiness Church. She was passionate about cooking, sewing, arts and crafts. She greatly enjoyed gardening, canning vegetables and gospel music. She was always looking for a good recipe to try out. She loved spending time with her family and friends she always welcomed company and people stopping by to visit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Benjamin and Mittie Mae Armstrong Newton; husband of fifty-five years, John T. Wells; brother, John Ira Newton; sister, Louise Dockens; grandson, Trevor Benjamin Wells; son-in-law, Don Grant; great-granddaughter, Kinsey Williamson.

Mrs. Wells is survived by her son, Claude Benjamin “Ben” (Patsy) Wells of Destrehan, La.; three daughters, Linda (Joe) Lister of Flomaton, Ala., Brenda Sue Hauer of Brandon, Miss. and Faye Grant of McDavid, Fla’; sister, Martha Sims of Century; two sisters-in-law, Stella Knowles and Emma Lee Newton; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 3 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC. with Reverend Jonathan Hill officiating. Burial followed at Byrneville Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday May 19, 2024 from 2 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC.

Pallbearers were Andrew Varner, Nathan White, Grant Matlock, John Wells, Stephen Wells and Kenny Williamson.

Michael Darwin Walters

Mr. Michael Darwin Walters, age 68, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2024 in Mobile, Ala. He was born on in Atmore to Darwin Weber Walters and Lola Phillips Walters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Alabama football. He was an avid motorcyclist and absolutely loved his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Walters is survived by his sister, Linda Hayes of Pensacola, Fla.; his niece and nephew, Tonya (Robert) Hurst and Scott (Tracy) Hayes; his great nieces and nephews, Brittany Hurst, Heather Hurst, Dakota Hayes, Seth Hayes and Dylan Hayes.

Graveside services were held Monday, May 20, 2024 at 1l a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.

Dorothy Nicholson Albert

Mrs. Dorothy (Dottie) Albert, age 96, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at Atmore Nursing Care Center. She was born in Carlisle, Penn. She was a graduate of Carlisle High School and Pennsylvania State Extension College. She married J Russell Nicholson, a sailor during World War II and worked as an executive secretary for the Vice President of Masland Carpet Company. She went on to sell real estate in Pennsylvania until 1973.  After a family move to Atmore, Alabama and the death of her husband, she worked for the Atmore Public Library and then the First National Bank until her retirement in 1993.  Dorothy remarried Anthony (Tony) Albert in November 1983.

During her time in Atmore, Dorothy did a lot of volunteer work with such great organizations as (but not limited to) Christian Care Ministry, Chamber of Commerce, Fiddlers Convention, the Atmore Community Hospital Auxiliary, Atmore Nursing Home, Joy Riders, AACCM Board of Directors, Hurricane Ivan Federal Assistance Application Assistance, US Federal Census, Pre-Disaster Planning, Voter Registration Judge, ongoing Church activities and Meals on Wheels.  She was awarded the 2010 Citizen of the Year award by the Atmore Chamber of Commerce for her service and general caring of others.  Dorothy moved to McKinney, Texas in 2011 to be closer to her family where she enjoyed the residents and their daily and weekly events at a retirement village.  She moved back to Atmore in 2022 as a resident of the Summit Assisted Living facility.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Burnetta Stouffer; sisters and brother Margaret Myers, Wayne Stouffer, Lois Lupien and Betty Schoff; first husband, J. Russell Nicholson; second husband, Anthony (Tony) Albert and great-grandson, Christopher LaBombard.

Mrs. Albert is survived by two children, Mark Nicholson (Janice Lyles) and Mary Ann Wingard; three grandchildren, Dina Labombard, Joseph Wingard and AJ Nicholson;  three great-grandchildren, Katherine  LaBombard, Cameron and Taylor Wingard.  

Interment will be held at Westminster Cemetery in Carlisle, Penn. at a later date.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, PA 17601 Friday, June 28, 2024 at 5 p.m.  Friends may greet the family informally following the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Gingrich’s Mennonite Cemetery in Lebanon PA.

William “Bill” White Jr.

Mr. William “Bill” White, Jr., age 51, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024. He was a lifelong resident of Atmore. He loved spending time with his family and his dog “Harley”. He enjoyed getting out and socializing. He liked grilling, going hunting and also enjoyed “Alabama Football” and sitting back watching TV.
He was preceded in death by his father, Billy White; one sister, Sabrina Godwin, and one niece, Kayla Godwin.
Mr. White, is survived by his mother, Louise White of Atmore; one sister, Melissa White of Perdido, Ala.; one nephew, Justin White of Atmore; two nieces, Shyla O’Barr and Camryn O’Barr, both of Perdido, Ala.; one great-niece, Elliana Allen, other relatives and friends.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC.

Chiquita Ewing, age 38, of Century, Fla., passed away Saturday, May11, 2024.

The family will receive friends Friday, May24, 2024 from 3 until 6 p.m. at Christian Memorial Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Lodge Baptist Church, Century. Burial will follow in Century Cemetery.

Mr. Willie (Bill) McMillan of Atmore (Poarch Community) passed away Monday, May 20, 2024 at his home.
