Horst (Mike) and Shirley Grunert of Atmore recently attended their grandson’s graduation from boot camp.
This is the third generation of what has become a family tradition in military service.
Horst served 20 years in the Navy.
The couple’s son Eric served four years in the Army, then 20 years in the Air Force.
And now, the couple’s grandson, Eric’s son, Mecoa E. Grunert, graduated from boot camp as a Space Ranger in the Space Force. His graduation was held February 29 in San Antonio, Texas. Though Mecoa is carrying on a family tradition, he’s also serving in the newest branch of the military. The Space Force was established in December 2019, the first new branch of the armed services in 73 years.
Mecoa will now be stationed in California to attend school in the three divisions of Space Force.
The mission of Space Force is to “Secure our Nation’s interests in, from, and to space.”
The official march of the Space Force is Semper Supra – Always Above.
Semper Supra
We’re the mighty watchful eye,
Guardians beyond the blue.
The invisible front line,
Warfighters brave and true.
Boldly reaching into space,
There’s no limit to our sky.
Standing guard both night and day,
We’re the Space Force from on high.
