Melissa Kay Ellis

Mrs. Melissa Kay Ellis, age 66, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024 in Flomaton, Ala.

She was a native of Century, Fla. and a lifelong resident of Flomaton. She was a member of Gospel Light Chapel. She was devoted to her family and a dedicated caregiver to her son. She was a proud member of Poarch Band of Creek Indians and enjoyed fishing and watching Alabama football. She was a 1993 graduate of Jefferson Davis Community College. She had many friends from around the world; was an avid video gamer; loved to read and was a very hard worker which was something she greatly enjoyed doing.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Barnhill; two brothers, Roger Wayne Barnhill, Michael Wayne Barnhill and one sister Terri Watkins.

Mrs. Ellis is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Philip Ellis of Flomaton; son, Mickey Powell of Flomaton; daughter, Kelly (Lyndal) “Lyn” Emerson of Flomaton; father, Dillard Barnhill of Atmore, Ala.; two step-daughters, Sarah (Kenny) Solomon and Stephanie Ellis, all of Rutledge, Tenn.; step-son, Phillip (Courtney) Ellis of Rutledge; brother, Ronald Lane “Rocky” Barnhill of Atmore; sister, Madonna Faith of Atmore and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Noon at Petty- Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC. with Bro. Clarence Rolin officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 11a.m. until service time at Noon at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC.

Pallbearers were Kaicen McKinley, Lyn Emerson, Kenny Solomon, Deluca Green, Tracy Owen and Phillip Ellis.

Charles Louis Harris

Mr. Charles Louis Harris, age 83, passed away, Friday, March 1, 2024 in Atmore, Ala. He resided most of his life in the Walnut Hill, Fla. and Canoe, Ala. area. He retired as a brick mason with many years of service. He proudly served in the United States National Guard for many years. He loved rain and stormy weather. He most especially enjoyed raising horses, riding and training them along with team roping. He was an avid squirrel hunter with his dogs Pepper and Al. A favorite past time for him was shooting pool and playing volleyball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton Alexander (Zelma Harrison) Harris and one brother, Clint Harris, Jr.

Mr. Harris is survived by his one son, Wade (Veronica) Harris, of Bratt, Fla.; three step-sons, Mark Johnson, Mike Johnson and  Patrick Johnson, all of Tallassee, Ala.; two daughters, Tracey (Danny) Burkett and Tammy Garrett, both of Atmore; one step-daughter, Kelly Boles of Tallassee; one sister, Merle Hanks of Bratt, Fla.; six grandchildren, Wesley Maughon, Blayne Garrett, Synda Harris, Raven Weaver, Saige Garrett, Analeigh Harris; seven great-grandchildren, Onyx Davis, Lizzie Stewart, Emily Maughon, Russell Maughon, Walker Maughon, Laila Garrett, Owen Nichols; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Funeral Home Chapel LLC. with Bro. Fred Stallworth officiating. Burial will follow at Godwin Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday, March 4, 2024, from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Pallbearers will be Todd Harris, Terry Harris, Mark Harris, Danny Burkett, Johnny Griffis and Mark Hanks.
Honorary pallbearer will be Joe Johnson.

William Alfred “Freddie” Weekley

Mr. William Alfred “Freddie” Weekley, age 66, of Lottie, Ala., passed away Friday, March 1, 2024 in Atmore, Ala. He was a native of Atmore and resident of Lottie for most of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing; was an avid Florida Gators fan; traveling to the mountains, and watching drag racing along with a good NASCAR race. He greatly loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Harris Curry) Weekley and brother, Johnny Weekley.
Mr. Weekley is survived by his son, William Lee Weekley of Perdido; daughter, Tabitha Weekley (Carroll) Fulgham of Maben, Miss.; brother, Harold Weekley of Perdido.; nine grandchildren, Jacob, Vanessa, Ruthie; Emily, Alyssa, John, Isaiah; Faith and Stone; three great-granddaughters and one on the way.

Graveside and burial services will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 2p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Ronald Hall officiating

Jermel Portis

Mr. Jermel Portis, age 45, of Atmore, Ala., resident of New York, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Christian Memorial funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Catherine Lyons Walker

Ms. Catherine Lyons Walker, age 55, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, February 19, 2024 in Miller County Hospital in Colquitt, Ga. She was born to the late Howard and Mamie Lyons, Sr. She was educated by the Escambia County Middle School in Atmore and WS Neal High School in Brewton, Ala. as a member of the Class of 1988. She was better known to her family and friends as “Big Mama.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Walker; her parents/ her brothers, Freddie and Willie (Big Red) Lee.

Ms. Walker is survived by her two daughters, Shantelle and Shamelia; two brothers, David Lyons of Beaver Falls, Penn. and Howard Lyons, Jr. of Atmore; two sisters, Marylin Lyons of Atmore and Bernice Lamar of Clearwater, Fla.; four aunts, Dorothy McMillians, Vonceil Lee, Odessa Lee Jones and Novella Lee Johnson and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Christian memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Darlene McMillan presiding. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers and flower bearers were her cousins.

Mashanda Valnae Green

Ms. Mashanda Valnae Green, age 49, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024 at her home. She was born to Deloris and James Hal Green in Escambia County, Ala. She was a 1993 graduate of Escambia county High School; was a Jefferson Davis Community College graduate of 2012 as LPN; worked at William F. Green State Veteran Home. She united with Mt. Gillead Missionary Baptist Church serving faithfully until God directed her to El Bethel Holiness Church under the leadership of Apostle Louis Banks. She was a very special person with her church always willing to help where needed.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Orion and Cenny James, Mary Lee  and James Hal Green, Sr.; great-grandparents, Pearlinne and Arthur James, Gordon and Alice Craig and Thelma Green; aunts, Cenny R. McWhoter and Berlinda James Howard; uncles, Ronnie James, Charlie Green and Gauis Craig.

Ms. Green is survived by her mother and father; brothers, James Phillip (Shandra) Green, Jamarius Green; siister, Tamara Green; step-sisters, Kimberly (Catadro) North, Shawn Fountain; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; cousins; special friends, Renae Parker, Nataile Coates, Nikki Jackson; special devoted God-daughter, Dara McCullam; special people she could always call on, William Thomas, J’Myreon Whatley, James Whatley, D’Marcus Howard, D’Untra Howard, Yolanda Williams, Katral James and Deon Frye.

Homegoing Celebration Services were held Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Michael L. Wilson, Sr., Pastor and Dr. Earnestine Fountain, Presider.

Pallbearers and flower bearers were her cousins and friends.

Myra Louise Benton

Mrs. Myra Louise Benton, age 82, of Dallas, Ga. and formerly of Austell, Ga., passed away Monday, February 26, 2024. She was born to Edna and Guy Nunn in Atlanta, Ga. She attended O’Keefe High School. She had incredible tenacity and was a tireless hard worker knowing the value of never giving up. Abounding with style, she had a strong love of flowers, gardening and photography which was evident in her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Frank Nunn, and her husband of fifty-seven years, Arthur “Gene” Benton.
Mrs. Benton is survived by her two sons, Scott Benton of Villa Rica, Ga. and Dale Benton (Victoria) of Anniston, Ala.; sister, Francis Reagan of Dallas, Ga.; beloved grandson, Daniel Benton and many beloved extended family members and friends

The family received friends Sunday, March 3, 2024 from 1:30-2:30 p.m.  

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 2:45 p.m. at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, Mableton, Ga. with Dr. J. Randal Whitten officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

Carl Madison

Mr. Carl Madison, age 93, of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Sunday, February 3, 2024 after a lengthy illness.
