Mike H. Parker

Parker

Mr. Mike H. Parker, age 62, of Atmore, Ala, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in Mobile, Ala. He was born in Atmore to Roy “Buck” and Mary Evelyn Maughon Parker. He retired from CSX Transportation with over forty-two years of service as a Foreman.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Billy Roy Parker.

Mr. Parker is survived by his sons, Jake Parker of S.C., Quinton “Squeaky” Parker of Atmore and James West of Elmore County, Ala.; his daughter, Chyanne (Dylan) Johnson of Atmore; his brothers, Mickey (Sue) Parker of Lakeview, Ala. and Mark Parker of Atmore; his grandchildren, Jacob Elijah Parker, Jackson Christopher Parker, Evelyn Nicole Parker, Blake Lyne Johnson and George Johnson.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Larry Beauchamp officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Hoa Thi Nguyen

Nguyen

Ms. Hoa Thi Nguyen, age 87, of San Diego, Calif. passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024 in Atmore, Ala. She was born in Bíng Du’o’ng, Vietnam to Niem Van Nguyen and Giau Thi Huynh.

Ms. Nguyen is survived by her children Cuc Nguyen, Tony Nguyen, Lilly Thomas, Kimhuong Nguyen, Kimberly Huyhn, Kim Hue Nguyen, Kim Chi Nguyen and Hung Ngoc Nguyen.

Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 11 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Atmore, Ala.

Jewell Presley Dockens

Mrs. Jewell Presley Dockens, age 84, of Booneville, Ala. passed away Friday, January 19, 2024 in Lucedale, Miss. She was born in Bay Minette, Ala. to the late William “Pete” and Ida Mae Miller Presley. She was a homemaker most of her life and was a charter member of Lottie Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, William “Buddy” Presley, Ralph Presley, Ray Presley, Mary Milstead, Annie “Dee” Norton, Linda Faye Milstid and Ida Pearl Lofton.

Mrs. Dockens is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Lindsey Dockens; children, Mike (Doris) Dockens, Darlene (Jeff) Taylor; David (Tereasa) Dockens and Chris (Daniela) Dockens; her brother, Rodger D. (Marilyn) Presley; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Presley Cemetery in Lottie, Ala.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Ronald E. Smith

Mr. Ronald E. Smith, 78, of Atmore, Ala. and formerly of Gulfport, Miss. passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024, in Atmore. He was born in Gulfport and had been a resident of Alabama for about twenty years. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Biloxi, Miss. and also a graduate of Mississippi State University. He previously served in the US Air Force. He was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church in Atmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Fayard Smith and Seymour J.E. Smith, Jr.  

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Blinda Davis Smith of Atmore and a brother, Arnold E. Smith of Gulfport.

A graveside service will be held at the Biloxi National Cemetery.  Details of the service will be noted at a later date.

The family prefers memorials to St. Robert Catholic Church, 600 S. Main Street, Atmore, AL 36502.

Betty Louise White

Mrs. Betty Louise White, age 87, of Flomaton, Ala., passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024, at her residence. She was born in Glasgow, Ky. and had been a resident of the Flomaton area for the past fifty-one years. She liked to travel, having been to forty-eight states in the U.S.  She had been involved the Flomaton schools PTO and was in a bowling league. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and taking care of her husband. She was of the Presbyterian faith. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Walker and Maggie Walker and a sister, Charlotte Newman.

Mrs. White is survived by her husband of sixty-nine years, Harvey J. White, Jr. of Flomaton; two sons, Doug (Sarah) White and Jeff (Christy) White; two daughters, Lisa (Paul) Chapman and Laura (Jeff) Taylor, all of Flomaton; two sisters, Grace Lewis of Nashville, Tenn. and Carol Webb of Lewisburg, Tenn.; eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Little Escambia Baptist Church with Bro. Jeff Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Wadkins-Mize Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. service time.

Pallbearers will be Kevin White, Robert Cordell, Eric Webb, Jay Jackson, Jeff Luker and Jake Parker.

Walter Michael Gillion

Mr. Walter “Mr. Mike” Michael Gillion, age 77, of Mobile, Ala., passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at his residence. A graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law in 1971, he practiced law in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi for five decades. He served twenty-two years in the US Air Force Reserve, achieving the rank of Major. He was a past president of the Mobile County Democratic Executive Committee, a Scout leader, a mentor to young attorneys and a member of Mensa International and several civic organizations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite Copeland Gillion and Joseph Horace Gillion.

Mr. Gillion is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-five years, Elizabeth Currie Gillion; his daughter, Morgan Gillion Toland (Martin); his son, Merlin Freeman Gillion (Shelby) of Charleston, S.C.; granddaughters, Madeline Toland and Reese Toland of Birmingham, Ala. and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Saturday, January 20, 2024 from 1 until 3 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home with a memorial service following at 3 p.m. in the chapel.

Margaret Belinda Barron-Martin

Mrs. Margaret Belinda Barron-Martin, age 70, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024. She was born in Nokomis, Ala. to the late Deacon Raymond Barron and Mary Lee Barron. She was part of the Class of 1972 at Escambia County High School. She was a member of Mt. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Nokomis serving as treasurer for many years . She retired from Atmore Nursing Center.

She was preceded; in death by her parents; four sisters, Minnie Ruth Barron, Irene Downey, Allean Robinson and Maraverene Barnes; three brothers, Floyd Barron, Noah Lewis Barron and Raymond Barron, Jr.; one daughter, Melody Anissa Thomas; one step-son, Narvie Dortch; one special brother-in-law, Dan Robinson.

Mrs. Barron-Martin is survived by her devoted husband, Geno Martin of Nokomis; two sons, Christopher (Latasha) Thomas of Calera, Ala., Paul Martin of Atmore; one daughter, Stephanie Thomas of Atmore; five sisters, Mary Barron of Hempstead, N.YH., Alice (Jerome) Hussey of Freeport, N.Y., Barbara Forney and Dora English, both of Atmore and Minnie (Lucious) Street of N.C.; one brother, Walter (Virginia) Barron of Westbury, N.Y.; grandchildren, Takira Thomas, Sylvia Thomas, Alexis Thomas, Cleondria Thomas, Charles Thomas, Shi-loh Thomas, Adalya Thomas, Gracie Thomas, Jayden Thomas, Paul Martin, Jr. and Essence Martin; great-grandchildren, Amarvi Crooks, Jha’Kariah Terrick, Tyliyah Crooks, Anissa Terrick, Knowledge Barnes, Lyric Barnes, Loyalty Young, Carmelo Thomas, Marziia Crooks and Wisdom Barnes; special grandchildren, India Crenshaw, Ciara Crenshaw, Malazia Crenshaw and LaKarlton Nye Russell; special caregivers, Amarvi Crooks, Anissa Terrick and Charles Thomas; special God-Sisters, Agnes and Mary Wilson; special friends, Barbara Harris, Dorothy Robinson and Shirley Brown; a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11 a.m. at M5t. Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Stephen, Pastor and Apostle Louis Banks, Sr., Eulogy/Officiant. Interment followed at Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers and flower bearers were her family and friends.

James Michael Helms

Mr. James Michael Helms, age 78, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Brewton, Ala. He retired as a truck driver with many years of service. He was an avid Alabama football and Atlanta Braves baseball fan who also enjoyed watching westerns and collecting coins. He enjoyed coaching baseball and softball through the years. He loved his Chihuahua “Skip” who loved riding in his lap on the lawn mower.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Coy Dow (Ardie Lee McCurdy) Helms; daughter, Nannette Helms and two sisters, Neva Glen Gomillion and Joyce Dean Farrish.

Mr. Helms is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Carolyn Helms of Canoe, Ala.; two sons, James Matthew Helms and Joseph Bryan Helms, both of Canoe; one daughter, Tametha Spring Helms of Canoe; five grandchildren, Sebastian Helms, Anastasia Helms, James Dorriety, Makayla Barlow, Franklin “Mikie” Helms; four great-grandchildren, Brantlee Dorriety, Lileigh Dorriety, Jaxen Barlow, Lakeland Barlow and a special niece, Jenifer Dykes, of Atmore; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Graveside services were held Monday, January 29, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Canoe Freewill Cemetery with Rev. Bill Stuckey officiating.
