Roy Dowling “Buddy” Godwin        

Mr. Roy Dowling “Buddy” Godwin, age 88, of Oak Grove, Fla., passed away Friday, August 11, 2023. He was born in Oak Grove to Edgar Clayton and Bertie Leona Godwin. He was a 1952 graduate of Ernest Ward High School and served in the United States Air Force. He was a retired electrician with Champion and a lifetime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was the overseer of Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery and the Oak Grove Community Center. He was known as one of the Oak Grove Historians and was a leader of the Oak Grove 4-H Club. He enjoyed farming and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bobbie June Ward Godwin; his son, Dwight Godwin and his siblings, Armontine “Tina” Biggs, Julian William Godwin and his infant sister, Mary Evelyn Godwin.

Mr. Godwin is survived by his wife Marvette Pullen Godwin; his sons, Doug (Vicki) Godwin, Lamar (René) Godwin, Ryan (Crystal) Godwin and Mark (Lois) Dean, all of Oak Grove; his daughter-in-law, Judy Godwin; his sisters, Joyce Fore of Robinsonville, Ala. and Betty Ann (Donald) Dennis of Oak Grove; his eighteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Albritton and Bro. Dennis Terry officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Oak Grove.

Active pallbearers will be Jepp Godwin, William Plato, Doug Godwin, Jr., Brandon Dean, Trevor Dean, Justin Godwin and Jake Godwin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Judevine, Danny Fuller, Bobby Mason, Jim Hual, Don Wilson, Don Dennis, Dudley Harrison and Doug Hagar.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 9 a.m. until service time at 10 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Michael Lawrence Wood                    

Mr. Michael Lawrence Wood, age 56, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 in Bay Minette, Ala. He was born in Springfield, Ill. to Ronald and Beverly Schmittler Wood. He was a deacon and a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ. He was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. Earlier in his career, he was the Director of a juvenile facility and a Bootcamp Probation Officer. He also assisted in the Wilderness Therapeutic Programs in Tennessee, writing much of the protocols. Later, he was the Correctional Warden I at GK Fountain Correctional Facility.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly Ann Wood.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Tina Thomas Wood; his children, Emma Beth (Colt) Black of Jasper, Ala., Leah Faye Wood and Charles Michael “Jeb” Wood, all of Atmore; his father, Ronald Wood; his sister, Rhonda (Gary) Barnett of Vandalia, Mich. and his grandchildren, Ronin Ray Black, Willa Winter Black, Riven Rori Black and Wilder Wade Black.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 17, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home with Bro. Brad Sullivan and Bro. Sammy Bynum officiating with Military Honors. 

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Michelle Swick-Marshall 

Marshall

Ms. Michelle Swick-Marshall, age 45, of Poarch, Ala., passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023 in Atmore, Ala. She was born in Chicago, Ill. to James and Ruby Hubbird Swick. She was a proud member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. She enjoyed watching television, dancing and being with her family.  

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ms. Marshall is survived by her children, Gabrielle Marshall of Poarch, Nicholas Gilman of Fort Bragg, N.C. and Jordan Gilman of Chicago; her brothers, Daniel (Megan) Swick and Alex Swick, both of Chicago; her sisters, Jamie Swick (Felipe Correa) and Angela (Marco) Swick-Calderon, all of Chicago; her nieces and nephews, Bianca, Briana, Lilliana, Marco, Anthony, Daniel, Isabella and Sophia.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 18, 2023 at 3 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel.

Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Swick, Alex Swick, Nicholas Gilman, Jordan Gilman, Marco Calderon, Anthony Calderon, Ron Marshall, Cameron Marshall and Little Ron Marshall.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 18, 2023 from 2 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Una Annette “Ann” Godwin Miller 

Miller

Mrs. Una Annette “Ann” Godwin Miller, age 90, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023 in Dalton, Ga. She was born in Oak Grove, Fla. to Lawrence Floyd Godwin and Annie Leona Greer Godwin. She cherished trips with her husband to the mountains. She also loved spending time with her family and enjoyed sewing.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert F. Miller, Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Kathy Miller and her siblings, Evelyn, Hazel, Janice, Windell and Louis.

Mrs. Miller is survived by children, Robert (Tammy) Miller, Brenda (Carlos) Ferley, Eddie Miller and Michael (Patty) Miller; twelve grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Oak Grove with Bro. Dennis Terry officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Miller, Eddie Miller, Cory Suckley, Ashton Suckley, Robbie Miller, AJ Miller and Robert “Bud” Miller.

Harold Ray Brown

Mr. Harold Ray Brown, age 80, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2023 at his home in Atmore, Ala. He has resided most of his life in McDavid, Fla. before moving to Atmore. He was an Elder and Pastor of Union Primitive Baptist Church.

He enjoyed watching and taking all the kids to all their sporting events.  He always enjoyed sitting down to watch a good western.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Van Daw (Maggie Hall) Brown; one son, Steven A. Brown; four brothers, Van Brown, Jr.,  Isaac Brown, Edward Brown, Harvey Brown;  four sisters, Shirley, Effie, Ida Mae and Dorris.

Mr. Brown is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Oleta Brown of Atmore; one son, Gerald Brown of Atmore; one daughter, Cynthia (Chris) Smith of Warner Robbins, Ga.; one brother, Troy (Betty) Brown of McDavid; daughter in-law, Angie Brown of Pensacola, Fla.;  nine grandchildren, Derek Brown, Katie Miliam, Roy Brown, Carrie Simonye, Tammie Stump, Jackson Smith, Kendal Smith, Presleigh Smith, Ella Smith;  fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 21, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Elder Michael Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery Walnut Hill. 

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 20, 2023, from 6 p.m. until 8p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Violet Jewel Miller Baker

Mrs. Violet Jewel Miller Baker, age 96, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2023 in Bay Minette, Ala. She was born in Moscow, Tn. and has resided most of her life in Flomaton, Ala. She retired from Monsanto with twenty-eight years of service. She loved her church and helping Bro. Baker serve the Lord. She loved quilting, gardening in her flowers and sitting around watching westerns. She enjoyed going to the Smokey Mountains and cooking and gospel music.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert F. (Willie Mae Canady) Miller; two husbands, Rev. James Oliver Baker and Sidney H. Manning; three daughters, Gladys Boone, Ola Jean Odom and Jacqueline Hilliard.

Mrs. Baker is survived by her one son, Joe Franklin Eddins of Flomaton; one daughter, Nora Christine (Sammy) White of Flomaton;  one sister, Betty Faye Rackard of Atmore, Ala.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Rev. Rickey Tedder officiating.

Burial will follow at Beulah Chapel Cemetery.

Gary Cooper Bouler 

Bouler

Mr. Gary Cooper Bouler, age 92, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, August 18, 2023.  He was born in Freemanville, Ala. being youngest of the family and a tiny premature baby he was a favorite of his older siblings, and they loved him dearly his entire life as he did them. He was a faithful member of the Church Of Christ, always in attendance until recent poor health. He was a 1950 graduate of Excel High School; served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and as a Reservist for three years. He retired from Monsanto after 30 years. Upon retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling, camping, visiting family and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter L. Bouler; his mother, Bertha S. Bouler; sisters, infant, Flora Golden Bouler, Willa B. Carroll and Betty J. Turbiville; brothers, W.T. Bouler and Robert E. Bouler.   

Mr. Boulder is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Shirley Bouler of the home and two sons, Gary W. Bouler (Sylvia) of Dothan, Ala. and Dean F. Bouler of New York, N.Y.; a host of nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and nephews, too many to name.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 24, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Brad Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, Ala.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 24, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 10:30 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore.

Aubrey (Hawkeye) Hawkins

Mr. Aubrey (Hawkeye) Hawkins, age 70, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, August 18, 2023 at Atmore Community Hospital.

Ms. Georgia Dortch, age 64, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, August 14, 2023.
