John Calvin “Little Crow” Dannelley

Mr. John Calvin “Little Crow” Dannelley, age 57, passed away Monday, July 10, 2023 in Mobile, Ala. He was a resident of Atmore most of his life. He was a proud member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and was employed with them for six years, farming. He was a long haul truck driver for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his dog “Sassy”. He enjoyed riding and doing tractor work. He was an avid Alabama football fan and enjoyed sitting around in his recliner watching westerns.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Calvin Dannelley, mother, Mable McGhee Germain and one brother, Bobby Dannelley.

Mr. Dannelley is survived by his loving wife of twenty-two years, Sandra Dannelley of Lottie, Ala.; two step-sons, Joseph Lee (Sadie) Boyette of Dover, Del. and Kenneth Lee Boyette of Tenn.; one sister, Cindy Bryars of Poarch, Ala.; two grandchildren, Ryan Boyette and Kaitlyn Boyette; other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Rev. Leon McGhee officiating. Burial will follow at McCullough Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 12, 2023 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Lassiter, Michael Lassiter, Newton Lassiter, Thomas “Big Boy” Dalrymple, Jonathan Partin and David Byrd.

Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Ordis, Brian Adkinson, Darrell Hollinger, Charles Michael Gregson, Bubba O’Barr and John Dalrymple.

Kenneth Ray Pugh, Jr.

Mr. Kenneth Ray Pugh, Jr; age 39, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2023 in Pensacola, Fla.. He was born in Baton Rouge, La. and later resided most of his life in Flomaton, Ala. He loved nature and tinkering with different things. He enjoyed sitting down watching history and nature shows, and enjoyed going to the creek. He always had a green thumb for growing plants and vegetables.
He was survived by his father, Kenneth Ray (Nicole) Pugh, Sr; of DeRidder, La.; mother, Janice Pugh of Flomaton; one step-brother, Dakota Betts of DeRidder; one step-sister, Tiffany Mendoza of DeRidder; two sisters, Sena Daw of Flomaton and Amanda Pugh, both of Atmore, Ala.; ten nephews; three nieces; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Rev. Josh Long officiating. Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 14 2023 from 6 pm. until 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Jean R. Roley

Mrs. Jean R. Roley, age 92, of Davisville, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2023 in Century, Fla.  She was born in Atmore, Ala. to the late Jesse Isaac Reid and Connie Stuckey Reid.  

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Hollis Roley.

Mrs. Roley is survived by her children, Glenn, Connie and Roxanne and her special niece, Susan Goldberg.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Pine Barren Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Mike Harper officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Barren Baptist Church Cemetery.

L.C. Stewart

Mr. L.C. Stewart, age 86, of Stockton, Ala. passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2023. He was born in Perdido, Ala. to the late T.C. and Catherine Stewart. He worked as a Forestry Pulpwood Loader.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Linda Allen Stewart; his sons, Billy Stewart of Rabun, Ala. and Barry (Angie) Stewart of Stockton; his daughters, Robin Pipkin and Marie (Toby) Eaton, all of Bay Minette, Ala. and Sherry (Paul) Barker of Spring Hill, Fla.; his sister, Lizzie Bell Skipper of Huxford, Ala. and numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 12 Noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Earl Crook officiating.  Interment will follow in Pine Barren Baptist Church Cemetery in Davisville, Fla.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 11 a.m. until service time at Noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore.

Olivette M. McGhee

Mrs. Olivette M. McGhee, age 78, of Poarch, Ala., passed away Thursday, July 13, 2023. She was born in Atmore, Ala. to the late Shirley L. McGhee and Willie Lee (A.D.) Martin.  She was a proud member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and a member of the Poarch Community Church.  She served on the Mennonite Christian Fellowship Committee for numerous years.  She was a seamstress with Vanity Fair for many years.  During her career, she was a Licensed Practical Nurse and served as Poarch Band of Creek Indians Medical Record’s Manager.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty-two years, Dewey L. McGhee; her siblings, Shirley Von McGhee, Jody Martin, Bobby Martin and her granddaughter, Feather McGhee.

Mrs. McGhee  is survived by her children, Calvin (Patsy) McGhee, Tyler (Cynthia) McGhee and Natasha (Aubrey) Rolin, all of Poarch and Althea (Frankie) Bell of Atmore; her siblings, Ellis (Cynthia) Martin of Wetumpka, Ala., Randy (Carrie) Martin of Poarch, James T. Martin of Woodward, Texas, Phillip (Donna) Martin of Huxford, Ala., Matthew (Denise) Martin of Flomaton, Ala., Patricia Tew of Brundidge, Ala. and Angela Devilbiss of Poarch; her sister-in-law, Eldnar McGhee; her grandchildren, Kyle, Tamaniek, Thunder, Brian, Brooke, Brent, TJ, Lexie, Stormy, Kyler and Madyson and sixteen great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends; A special family friend, Annette Hixon Frye her children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Brian Eskelinen, Bro. David Weaver, Jr., Bro. Lashawen Hixon and her granddaughter, Tamaniek Sanchez officiating.  Interment will follow in New Home Cemetery in Poarch.

Active pallbearers will be Kyle Lage, Thunder McGhee, Brent Bell, Brian Bell, Kyler McGlothren, TJ McGhee and Frankie Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ellis Martin, Randy Martin, Timmy Martin, Phillip Martin and Matthew Martin.

Alan Lee Milliken

Mr. Alan Lee Milliken, age 74, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2023, in Pensacola, Fla. He was born in Steubenville, Ohio and later in life moved to Stroudsburg, Pa. He has resided the past twenty years in Cantonment, Fla. He retired as an Independent Supply Chain Consultant with many years of service. He loved keeping in touch with his old classmates (ECHS Class of 1966). He was very well-traveled, with his job and pleasure. He loved going to the casinos and he liked dancing at William Station Day. Back in the day he would sneak out of the house to go watch others drag race. He was an avid Auburn Tiger Fan….” War Eagle.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent (Miriam Luker) Milliken; one brother, Larry Milliken, Sr. and one sister, Rhonda Kinney.

Mr. Milliken is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Elizabeth Milliken of Cantonment; two sons, Mark Alan Milliken of Riverview, Fla. and Roger Lee Milliken of Cantonment; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Rev. Bill Stuckey officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Yvonne (Bonnie) Johnson Grissett 

Grissett

Mrs. Yvonne (Bonnie) Johnson Grissett, age 70, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 after battling thyroid cancer, double pneumonia, a heart valve replacement and fearlessly tackled dialysis. She was born in Atmore to Deacon Robert Johnson, Jr. and Mary Bell Brooks Johnson. She was an active member of Greater Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church where she directed plays, organized youth trips and served in the Missionary Society. She was a 1971 graduate of Escambia County High School, attended Troy State University with a Bachelor degree in K-6 Elementary Education with a K-12 reading endorsement. She taught the students of Escambia County Alabama for thirty-five years. Her best-known qualities were her creativity throughout the kitchen and home accessories, and her relentless bordering on obsessive ability to shop until all around her dropped.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Deacon Freddie J. Grissett; her father, Deacon Robert Johnson, Jr; her mother, Deaconess Mary Johnson; mother and father-in-law, LT Grissett and Katie Lee Williams; four brothers-in law, Samuel McCants, Willie McCants, Bobby Jones and Charles Jones; two sisters-in-law, Esther Shuford and Danette Witcher Jones as well as cherished family members and friends.

Mrs. Grissett is survived by her protective big sister, Lillie D. Johnson; two aunts, Dorothy Brazzell and Mattie Johnson; two loving daughters, Tovjivanese (Robert) Wilkerson and Tonyaneka (Scott) Gaskins; one brother-in-law, Otis Gray Jr.; three precious grandchildren, Nathaniel F Gaskins, Tatum Y-J Wilkerson, Nailah C-J Gaskins; one nephew, Randy D. Johnson, three nieces, Shelia (Ewric) Johnson-Williams, Katrina (Leon) Frazier, Lisa Johnson; one great niece, Chanel Edwards; two great-nephews, Darrius M. Primm and Jordan R. Lambert; five devoted cousins, Wilbert Brooks, Charles Wiggins, George Brooks, Anthony Brooks and Patricia McKenzie. Through the teachings of Ada and Bill Brooks, she was born into a close-knit family and leaves a host of family, devoted friends and loved ones.

Celebration of Life services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Willie Hawthorne, Pastor and Eulogist. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 21, 2023 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Turner Funeral Chapel.

Luthlia Jackson, age 61, of Brewton, Ala., passed away Monday, July 17, 2023 at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

Dorothy Gray, of Coy, Ala., passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 at her home in Montgomery, Ala.

Hoover Brown

Mr. Hoover “Sport” Brown, age 92, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was born in Uriah, Ala. to Homer Brown, Sr. and Vera Thomas. He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church serving for more than forty years. After having to drop out of school in 6th grade he eventually obtained his high school diploma and an Associates of Arts Degree from Faulkner College. After serving in the Navy he was employed at Monsanto and retired after thirty-eight years. His hobbies included fishing, reading and gardening, taking great pride in his Amaryllis and Hydrangeas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; eight of his ten siblings, Clarence, Mae Ida, Homer II, Millie, Minnie, J.S., Wallace and Ugen; one grandchild, Byrain and other relatives.

Mr. Brown is survived by five children, DeVan “Van”, George DeVon “Von” (Shan), Andre (Katrinka), Renee “Nee” (Wayne) and Eric (Gwendolyn); sister, Vera Smallwood; brother, Carl Ray Brown (Frankie); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Empowerment Tabernacle Pastor Homer Brown officiating. Burial followed in Mount Shiloh Cemetery, Nokomis, Ala.

Pallbearers were Andre Brown, Jr., Erech Brown, Christian Rowe, Jakkob Brown, Willie Brown and Dewanzo Brown.

Flower attendants were his grand-daughters and nieces.

Ruby Grant

Mrs. Ruby Grant, age 75, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, July 10, 2023 at her residence. She was born in Bay Minette, Ala. to George and Minnie Lee Johnson. She was a proud graduate from Baldwin County Public School System. She was employed at Vanity Fair Mills until retirement. She was a member of New Order Missionary Baptist Church in Freemanville, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Linda Grant and Darnell Grant; two brothers, Jerry Johnson and Bernard Johnson.

Mrs. Grant is survived by her husband, Donald Grant, Sr. of Atmore; two sons, Donald Grant, Jr. and Eric A. Grant; one granddaughter, Erianna McKay; two sisters, Lois (Nathaniel) Cox and Geraldine (Eugene) Marshall; five brothers, George W. Johnson, Eddie Lee Johnson, Ricky (Kim) L. Johnson, Billy Ray (Lula) Johnson and Jeffrey Earl (Tracie) Johnson; one aunt, Mary Williams and one uncle, Leon Williams; one brother-in-law, David (Odessa) Grant; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 2 p.m. at New Order Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Sidney Grant, Jr., Pastor and Apostle Derrick Bishop, Eulogy.
