Atmore police reported last Friday, June 30, the arrest of an Atmore man who is accused of shooting another local man to death in late May.
APD Sgt. Darrell McMann reported that 44-year-old Eric Depaul Mitchell, who is charged with the shooting death of Robert Starks on May 29, was arrested June 29 and is charged with one count each of murder and discharging a firearm into a building or vehicle.
The shooting happened around 2:15 a.m. in the area of Carver Avenue and King Street. Officers were sent to the site after emergency dispatchers relayed a shots-fired report. They arrived to discover two people with gunshot wounds.
Both victims were taken to Atmore Community Hospital, where Starks, age not provided, died from his injuries. The other individual was treated at ACH, then transported to an area trauma center.
Police have still not released a motive for the fatal shooting.
McMann said police have been seeking the shooting suspect, who was not injured in the exchange of gunfire, since shortly after the incident, when investigators identified him as the shooter.
Mitchell remained in the Escambia County Detention Center, without bond, late Friday, June 30.
