Tammy Lyn Barnett

Mrs. Tammy Lyn Barnett, age 60, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023 in Fairhope, Ala.  She was born in Evergreen, Ala. to David Clinton Nichols and Ellen Voncille Black. She was a seamstress with Vanity Fair Corporation.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David Clinton Nichols and Ellen Voncille Black Brooks.

Mrs. Barnett is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Vardria “Junior” Barnett, Jr.; her loving dad, Jimmy Brooks; her step-children, Michael (Duffie) Barnett of Foley, Ala. and Judy (Terrell) Clark of Montrose, Ala.;  her sisters, Shelia (Randy) Janes of Daphne, Ala. and Tracy (Shannon) Nichols of Loxley, Ala.; her nieces and nephew, John (Scott) Janes, Ashley (Brian) Stewart, McKenzie (Brandon) Jackson and Brianna (Justin) Stringer along with her great- nieces and nephews, Ella Stewart, Gemma Stewart, Amos Stringer and Kaleb Cheatham.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 7, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Brooks Family Cemetery in Lottie, Ala. Interment will follow in Brooks Family Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Brian Stewart, Scott Quinn, Kaleb Cheatham, Brandon Montgomery, Chris Fetner and Rob Arthur.

Eddie Leon Mooney

Mooney

Mr. Eddie Leon Mooney, age 66, of Oak Grove, Fla. passed away Friday, June 30, 2023 in Pensacola, Fla. He was born to Freddy Leon Mooney and Joan Milstead Mooney. He was blessed with wonderful parents who sought the care he needed to give him a great life. He was a lifelong resident of Oak Grove, Fla. He retired from International Paper Company in Cantonment, Fla. with twenty-seven years of service. He cherished time fishing with his dad and his sons on the Tensaw River.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Freddy Leon Mooney and Joan Reneé Mooney; his grandparents, Everett Mooney, Odie Mooney, Frankie Leslie Milstead and Beatrice Milstead.

Mr. Mooney is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, Eunice Marie Mooney; his two sons, Eddie Leslie Mooney of McDavid, Fla. and Casey Leon Mooney of Oak Grove, FL; his daughter, Miranda Danielle Mooney of Davisville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Landon Mooney, Hayden Mooney, Chloe Hyatt, Nolan Mooney and his step-mom, Betty Mooney.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Landon Mooney, Nolan Mooney, Hayden Mooney, James Morris, Jacob Coon, Tim Davis and Bryan Ballard.

Patricia Ann Smith

Ms. Patricia Ann Smith, age 78, passed away Monday, July 3, 2023, in Atmore, Ala. She was born in Century, Fla. and has lived most of her life in Atmore. She enjoyed going to gospel singings and going to the beach. She was an avid Alabama Fan and an Elvis Fan, and loved her animals. She was a very meticulous housekeeper, and never met a stranger.

She was preceded in death by her father, Clark Godwin; mother, Gwendolin Scruggs.

Ms. Smith is survived by her two sons, John Robert (Lisa) Helton of Louisville, Ky. and Donovan (Danell) Smith, of Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Melissa Miller, of Midlothian, Texas; four sisters, Joyce Rhinehart of Atmore, Gloria (Roger) Pelletier Bristol of Conn., Delores Palozie of New Hartford, Conn. and Kathryn Lisa (Andrea) Lips of Milton, Fla.; numerous grandchildren; special friend and minister, Rev. Patrick Madden; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held, Friday, July 7, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC with Re. Josh Long officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Gregory Thomas Nix

Nix

Mr. Gregory Thomas Nix, age 69, of Flomaton, Ala., passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023.  He was born to Homer Nix and Joan Barnes Nix. He was a graduate of Escambia Academy and served in the United States Navy. He was an exceptional cook and loved to share his talent with others especially with First Baptist Church of Atmore, where he attended. He also shared his talent of cooking at the Muskogee Inn.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Nix is survived by his son, Jeremy Nix of Minn.; his daughters, Jessica Nix Alexander of Wetumpka, Ala. and Lauren Nix (Austin) Meek of Auburn, Ala. and his brother, Ricky (Ellen) Nix of Spanish Fort, Ala.

No formal services will be held.

Betty Jo Smith Perkins House

Ms. Betty Jo Smith Perkins House, age 86, of Northport, Ala. (formerly an Atmore, Ala. resident), passed away Monday, July 3, 2023. Her greatest earthly treasure was her family and she enjoyed visiting with and going on trips with them. She enjoyed putting up fresh vegetables; loved sports, playing basketball and softball in her younger years as well as coaching softball in Atmore. She was a devout BAMA fan and was one of the first members of Alabama Softball’s “Walk Off” Club. She was the first girls’ softball coach to help establish league play for girls’ softball coach to help establish league for girls in Atmore.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. “Kit” Smith; mother, Maggie Pearl Commalander Smith; three sisters, Linda Sue Greer, Sherry Lynn Powell, Rhonda Lynette Smith; one grandson, Thomas Guy Byrne IV; one great-grandson, Brett Bonds, and one son-in law, Thomas Guy Byrne III.

Ms. House is survived by her one son, John T. (Jean) Perkins of Northport, Ala.; two daughters, Joann (Larry) Bonds of Atmore and Janice Byrne, of Stockton, Ala.; four brothers, Ronnie Smith of Wellington, Fla. Roy (Linda) Smith of Montgomery, Texas, Roger (Mabeline) Smith of Porter, Texas and Ray (Mena) Smith, of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Peggy (Lewis) Johnson of Shiloh, Ga., Glenda Morgan of Byrneville, Fla. and Pat Ammons of Atmore; ten grandchildren, Lori Rider, Larry Wayne Bonds, Stephen Bonds, Joshua Bonds, Nikki Lile, Chris Byrne, Katherine Byrne, Tina Walby, Tiffany Cierocke, Tierney Jo Broadwater, four great-great-grandchildren; special care-giver, Amy Wilson and other relatives.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes, LLC with Rev. Mike Spivey officiating. Burial will follow at Godwin Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC.

Travis Thompson 

Mr. Travis Thompson, age 86, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023 in Mobile, Ala. He was born in Rutledge, Ala. to Willie Frances Thompson.  He served in the United States Air Force and was a truck driver for over sixty years.  

He was preceded in death by his mother; his son, Christopher Travis Thompson and his daughter, Frances Patton.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Mary Woodward Thompson; his children, Charlotte Jones and Susie Thompson, both of Mobile, along with numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Melvin Randall Johnson

Mr. Melvin Randall Johnson, age 68, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at his home in Flomaton, Ala. He was born in Lafayette, Ala. He has resided most of his life in Flomaton. He was a truck driver in the oil field business for many years. He loved his dogs and riding them around on his gator. He liked doing tractor work, working cars and doing maintenance work. He loved his Tonka Toy. He enjoyed sitting down to watch a good western and going out to eat at Juicy Seafood. He loved his country and serving in the U. S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin (Sarah Boone) Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of five years, Pamela Johnson of Flomaton; one son, Burton (Ryan) Smith of Brewton, Ala.; three daughters, Amy Nisewonger and Angel (Thomas) Cofield, all of Flomaton and Sarah Johnson; one brother, Jason (Karen) Johnson of Fredericksburg, Va.; one sister, Marilynn Wilson of Flomaton; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 10, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home, LLC. with Rev. Glen Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.

Leo Hadley

Mr. Leo Hadley, age 65, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023, in Atmore, Ala. He has resided most of his life in Perdido, Ala. He worked at the shipyard for many years and enjoyed working seismograph. He enjoyed going deer hunting and traveling. He enjoyed telling stories and watching sports especially Alabama Football.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roil Hadley; mother, Zeta Mae Porter; three brothers, Donnie Hadley, Steve Hadley and Melton Hadley.

Mr. Hadley is survived by his step-mother, Maize Joiner of Perdido; companion, Elaine Hadley McGhee of Poarch; one son, Steven Hadley of Atmore; one step-son, Curtis (Alicia) McBride of Brewton, Ala.; two step-daughters, Gina Schwartz, of Wichita, Kans. and Tonia Schwartz of Brewton; five brothers, Gilbert Hadley of McCullough, Ala., Lamar (Bernice) Hadley and Thomas Earl Hadley, all of Perdido, Tony (Syretha) Hadley of Mize, Miss. and Mack (Tina) Hadley, of Rabun, Ala.; seven sisters, Imogene Boyington of Atmore, Darlene (Wendell) Stewart of Bay Minette, Ala., Daisy (Kenneth) Koenig of Brewton, Pauline Weaver of Crossroads, Ala. Tammy Stewart of Bay Minette, Ala., Louise (Louis) Brown of Nokomis, Ala., Lou Ann Johnson of Twin Falls, Idaho; numerous grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Ruby Johnson

Mrs. Ruby Johnson – Grant was born on June 28, 1948, to Mr. George and Minnie Lee Johnson in Bay Minette, Alabama. She was educated and a proud graduate from the Baldwin County Public School System. She was employed at Vanity Fair Mills of Escambia Division in Atmore, Alabama until retirement. Mrs. Ruby Johnson – Grant began her Christian experience at a very early age and was a member of the New Order Missionary Baptist Church located in Freemanville, Alabama.

Mrs. Ruby Johnson-Granted surrendered her cross to receive her crown on Monday morning July 10, 2023, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. George and Minnie Lee Johnson. Two daughters: Linda Gant and Darnell Grant and two brothers: Jerry Johnson and Bernard Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her loving husband, Donald Grant, Sr. of Atmore, Alabama. Two wonderful sons, Donald Grant, Jr. and Eric A. Grant. One precious granddaughter, Erianna McKay. Devoted siblings: (2) sisters: Lois (Nathaniel) Cox and Geraldine (Eugene) Marshall; (5) brothers: George W. Johnson, Eddie Lee Johnson, Ricky (Kim) L. Johnson, Billy Ray (Lula) Johnson and Jeffrey Earl (Tracie) Johnson. One aunt, Mary Williams, one uncle, Leon Williams and one brother-in-law, David (Odessa) Grant. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Nicholas Joseph Burnette, age 38, of Mobile, Ala., passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023 in Dallas, Texas. He was born in Bay Minette, Ala. to the late Edith M. Burnette Thomas and Billy McCall, Sr.

He was preceded in death by his mother; his daughter, Zaria Burnette; brother, Mark Burnette; nephew, Trey Andrews; grandparents, Johnnie and Louise Burnette and Willie and Ruth McCall; two older brothers, Thomas “Chuck” Brown and Antonio McCall as well as other family.

Mr. Burnette is survived by his father, Billy McCall, Sr. of Bay Minette; his children, Rhyan Alexander Anderson, Nicholas Burnette, Jr., Cenyia Rocker and Jason Molberry; his sisters, Marie Burnette of Dallas, Rejoice (Bryon) Pleasant of Atmore, Ala. and Stephanie McCall of Mobile; brothers, Robert Burnette of Dallas, David (Erika) Thompson of Bay Minette, Billy McCall, Jr. and Galen McCall of Rochester, N.Y.; two step-brothers, Rodney McCall of Mobile and Timothy Thomas, Jr. of Bay Minette; seventeen nephews; eleven nieces; five aunts and four uncles; devoted friend, Gregory Coleman, Jr. and Godmother, Beatrice Thompkins and Constance E. Infant Brooklyn Ke’oir Knight, age 5 months, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, July 3, 2023 at USA Women and Children’s Hospital in Mobile, Ala. She was born in Foley, Ala. to Audreana Denise McMillian and Tyson Tywon Knight.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Antonyo McMillian; great-grandfather, Robert Redmond and great-great-grandfather, George McMillian.

Brooklyn is survived by her parents; devoted grandmother, Shinora Redmond and Demetria Ellis; grandfather Tomorrion Knight Barnes; great-grandparents, Shirley (Ottis) McMillian English, Velma (late Robert) Redmond, Linda (Lester) Barnes and Barbara Ellis; great-great-grandparents, Arcile Knight and Dorothy McMillian; uncles, Tomorrion Knight Jr., Antonyo McMillian Jr., Marcus Wilson, Doreatha (Glen) Moorer, Detrick Riley, Jackie (Micheal) Hall, Sharon Riley, Lelia English, Renard McMillian, Angelo English; Godparents, Nikeeta (Hank) Benson McMillian and a host of other aunts and uncles; special home-care givers, Shafoya Gulley and Gasha Curry; very special nurses, Keri, Aimee, Rachel, Aleysha, Shellee, Della and Bridge (Mom) Renee.

Leslie Theodore Bonney

Mr. Leslie “Toot Boot” Theodore Bonney, age 72, of Repton, Ala., passed away Friday, June 30, 2023. He was born in Conecuh County, Ala. to Henry Lee and Bennie Mae Bonney. He was a member of Mt. Rose Baptist Church of Repton. His favorite places to be was The Waffle House/Church’s Chicken. Later in life, because of Life/Circumstances, he was taken in by Willie and Denease Watkins, his care-givers, where he lived for nine years until his passing. He never met a stranger that didn’t become a friend or a friend that didn’t love him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ernest Lee Bonney, Henry Lee Bonney, Jr., Calvin Bonney and Terry Bonney.

Mr. Bonney is survived by his care-givers; one brother, Willie James (Diane) Bonney of Bronx, NY; five sisters, Bonnie Jean (Joseph) White, Minister Helen White of Bronx, Genevieve (James) Parson of Middle Town, NY, Minnie Stanley, Diann (Kenneth) Lee of Evergreen, Ala.; one uncle, James (Betty) Autrey of Los Angeles, Calif; four aunts, Willie Mae Cunningham of Mobile, Ala., Ruby Lee McMillian, Annie Johnson and Anna Fair, all of Belleville, Ala.; two special cousins, Willie “Man”, Logan Watkins; adopted brothers, “The Watkins ns Brother Hood”.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Belleville Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Daniel Thompson, IV, Pastor and Dr. Forrest B. Lett, officiating. Interment followed at Belleville Baptist Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his cousins and friends.

Leslie Vernon Jarman

Mr. Leslie Vernon Jarman, age 44, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023. He was born in Springfield, Ill. to Everette Jarman and Bonnie Lee Adams Jarman. He was a Crew Boat Captain. He was an avid Alabama football fan and had a passion for motorcycles and cars.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Johnny Barkley.

Mr. Jarmon is survived by his loving fiancé, Kelly Asiong of Atmore; his brother, Michael Barkley of Calif.; his sisters, Roxie (Ricky) Pearson of Atmore and Diana Hirota of Ariz. and his nieces, Brianna Pearson, Rachelle Collins and Michelle McBride.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mike Soumeillan officiating.

Perry L. Gibbs

Mr. Perry L. Gibbs, age 66, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, July 3, 2023.  He was born in Atmore to Roy E. Gibbs and JoAnn Crummey Gibbs. He farmed most of his life but during his career, he worked for Masland Carpets, Inc. and Gary Purvis.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Gibbs is survived by his brothers, Gary (Carla) Gibbs of Cantonment, Fla., Tim (Gina) Gibbs of Davisville, Fla. and Chris (Teresa) Gibbs of Rabun, Ala.; numerous nieces and nephews along with a special family friend, Jason Howard.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
