Members of the Gamma Omega Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International honored a longtime member and friend at their meeting Thursday, October 7. Past Chapter and State President Nancy Karrick conducted a Ceremony of Remembrance for Dean Graham, who passed away May 6, 2021.
Dean’s daughters Anne Sherrill and Gayle Carpenter were in attendance
“Following are excerpts from Nancy’s comments about Dean:
During her lifetime, Dean was all the Society represents – a key woman educator. She performed her educational tasks with enthusiasm and dedication. Whatever she attempted, she carried through responsibly. She sought to enrich the lives of those she taught and those with whom she worked. Intellectual and professional growth were her constant goals. She was an educator who changed the lives of the children, parents, and professionals with whom she came in contact. Dean will be missed, but she left us a legacy.
“Dean joined Omega Chapter in Brewton on Nov. 12, 1971, and became a devoted member of the organization. When Omega reached a large number, the group of members from Atmore decided to form their own chapter … Gamma Omega was chartered on May 3, 1980, and Dean became our third chapter president, holding that position from 1984 until 1986. She served on many committees, and her knowledge of people often saw her asked to be on the Nominations Committee to help select our chapter officers. When the car left Atmore for Fall Board or the Beta State Convention, Dean was often one of the passengers. She enjoyed Delta Kappa Gamma, the members of her chapter, and her friends she made through the state organization.”
Past Gamma Omega Presidents Joanne Bonds and Mary Beth Lancaster joined Nancy in placing red roses of remembrance by Dean’s picture. The red rose is the official flower of the Society.
Current Chapter President Leslie Sellers presented Gayle and Anne with the Order of the Golden Rose certificate in tribute to her long and outstanding service to the Chapter.
