Burger King closed after early morning incident

Atmore’s Burger King restaurant remained closed this morning (Thursday, March 11) after an unidentified man, reportedly in the midst of a “mental crisis,” jumped the service counter and began knocking over shelves and other fixtures.

The incident took place around 6:30 a.m., and a BK employee said the man “seemed to be high on drugs or something.”

Police Chief Chuck Brooks said criminal charges have not been filed but are pending the outcome of the investigation into the matter.

“The guy was apparently having a mental crisis or some such issue,” Brooks said. “Our officers responded and got him to the hospital. Criminal charges may be filed, but right now it appears to be a mental issue.”

Brooks added that the man’s name would not be released until and unless criminal charges are filed against him. .

A spokesman for the restaurant said normal operations will hopefully resume before noon.
