Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations is conducting an investigation into the July 23 death of an inmate at Escambia County Detention Center.
Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said the unidentified inmate is believed to have died of natural causes, and the state probe is normal protocol for all in-custody deaths.
According to the sheriff, the inmate was unresponsive during a cell check that was conducted last Thursday by ECDC staff. Jackson added that the “elderly inmate was pronounced deceased at the scene from what appeared to be natural causes.”
