Betty Wells

Mrs. Betty Wells, age 88, of Byrneville, Fla., passed away Monday, October 21, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Canoe, Ala. to the late Marvin Ernest and Katie L. Davis Hall. She was a secretary for the F.B.I. and was a church secretary at Calvary Assembly of God in Orlando, Fla. before retiring. She enjoyed traveling, sightseeing, raising her tropical birds and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard “Dick” Wells; sisters, Julia Johnson and Martez Rutherford.

Mrs. Wells is survived by her son, John Wells of Merritt Island, Fla.; three daughters, Elizabeth Wells of Wausau, Wis., Anne (Tim) Jewett of Chuluota, Fla. and Leah (W.C. Jr.) Sanders of Byrneville, Fla.; one brother Jerry Hall of Century, Fla. and Jackie Brown of Bratt, Fla.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Friday, October 25, 2019 at 2 p.m. in Godwin Cemetery in Bratt, Fla.

Active pallbearers will be John Wells, Tim Jewett, Kirk Jewett, W.C. Sanders, Jr. and Jacky Helton

The family will receive friends Friday, October 25, 2019 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Imogene Mitchell

Mrs. Imogene Mitchell, age 92, passed away Monday, October 21, 2019 in Cantonment, Fla. She was a native of Knoxville, Texas, former resident of Fairhope, Ala. for thirty years and had resided in Daphne, Ala. for the past five years. She was a member of the DAR-Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fairhope United Methodist Church. She owned and operated her own Beautician Salon in Emmaus, Pa.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by two sons, Steven Huddleston of Daphne and David (Marta) Huddleston of Mountain View, Calif.; one daughter, Ginny (Tim) Gemmel of Emmaus; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Lee Gates, Jr. 

Gates

Mr. Robert Lee Gates, Jr., age 74, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2019 in Pensacola, Fla. He was a native of Robinsonville, Ala., former resident of Atmore, Ala. and had resided in Walnut Hill, Fla. for the past forty years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict where he was wounded and received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star. He was a Tug Boat Captain for fifty years where he was accident free. He was a member and former deacon at the Antioch Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Ruth Gates; parents, Robert Sr. and Vonnie Gates; three brothers, Charles Gates, Floyd Gates and Glennard “Buddy” Gates; baby sister, Ruth Augustine Gates; son, Martin Russell Lassiter and special friend, Wayne Burkette.
Mr. Gates is survived by his two daughters, Linda Lassiter-Hamilton of Panama City Beach, Fla. and Rebel Gates Howard of McDavid, Fla.; one brother, Bobby Ray Gates of Freemanville, Ala.; two sisters, Bonnie Williams and Wilerneese Cole, both of Atmore; seven grandchildren, Russell, Tosha, Tabitha, Lauren, Hannah, Haden and Martina and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Minister Brad Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, October 25, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Salvador B. Perez, Johnny Robb, Richard Burkette, Mark Burkette, Joe Clay Howard and Floyd Geary Gates.

Ruby L. Simmons

Mrs. Ruby L. Simmons, age 72, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019 in Century, Fla. She was a native of Pensacola, Fla. and had resided in Century for the past twenty years. She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Simmons is survived by her two sons, David L. (Jill) Smith of Daytona Beach, Fla. and James C. (Lisa) Smith, III of Dallas, Ga.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date.

Horace “Pee Wee” Sims

Mr. Horace “Pee Wee” Sims, age 85, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2019 at his home in Atmore, Ala. He was a native of Evergreen, Ala. and had resided in Atmore since 1985. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the Atmore Country Club. He attended the Little River Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sims; father, Ed Sims; mother, Willie Mae Faulk; step-son, Bobby Lassitter; three brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Sims is survived by his two sons, Terry Sims and Thomas Sims, both of Atmore; two daughters, Debbie (Steve) Albritton and Pamela (Mike) Godwin, all of Atmore; two brothers, David (Annette) Faulk of Lapine, Ala. and Thomas “Jr.” (Melanie) Sims of Red Level, Ala.; one sister, Jewell Faulk of Waynesboro, Miss.; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-two

Great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 27, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. D.L. Harville officiating. Burial followed at Poplar Springs Cemetery.

The family receive friends Sunday, October 27, 2019 from 1 until service time at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Autry Lee Tucker 

Mr. Autry Lee Tucker, age 86, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at his home in Atmore, Ala. He was a native of Monroe County, Ala. and had resided in Atmore for most of his life. He was a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the Atmore Apostolic Church, former grounds keeper with the tribe until his health forced him to retire. He played the drums at the Atmore Apostolic Church, was one of the hardest working men you will ever know and loved giving candy kisses to everyone he came in contact with.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Ara and Taft Sagers.

Mr. Tucker is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Lillie Bell Tucker of Atmore; one son, Jereme Waylon (Thresa) Tucker of Atmore; one daughter, Wanda Joyce (John) Byrne of Atmore; eight grandchildren, Hope, Jereme, Paisley, Heather, Megan, Daphne, Tyler and Andrew; three great-grandchildren, Arianna, Mikey and Aubrey; one brother-in-law, Jerry (Thelma) Williamson of Uriah, Ala.; two sisters-in-law, Mary McGhee and Faye Thomas, both of Atmore and special nephew, Robert Harold Rolin.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 25, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Atmore Apostolic Church with Rev. Tim James officiating. Burial followed at New Home Cemetery.

The family received friends Friday, October 25, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at the Atmore Apostolic Church.

Pallbearers were Billy Rice, Jerry Williamson, Roger Miller, Ronnie Baggett, Scott Schubring, Juston Stabler, Tony Schubring, Steven Schubring and Reese McNair.

Earnestine “Tina” Mallard 

Mallard

Ms. Earnestine “Tina” Mallard, age 76, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Rehabilitation Center at Park Place in Pensacola, Fla. She was a native of Atmore and attended Escambia County Training School. She later moved to Santa Barbara, Calif. where she resided for many years and was employed by the U. S. Government. She was also a member of Friendship Baptist Church while living there. She relocated back to Atmore over 20 years ago and united with Zion Star AME Zion Church serving faithfully as a member and president of the Usher Board, member of the Steward Board, Culinary Committee, and the Prayer Band.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Alonzo Owens and Victor Crockett; her parents, Anderson “Bud” Owens and Olivia Dennis Owens; one sister, Betty Ann Owens – Archie; and a brother, Charles E. Owens.

Ms. Mallard is survived by two sons, Ronald Joe Crockett and Charles Darryl Crockett of Lompoc, Calif.; a nephew she loved and reared as her own, Jacob “Kalil” Archie, IV of Atmore; a niece she loved and reared, Ebony Owens of Detroit, Mich.; one step-daughter, Stephanie Mallard of Los Angeles, Calif.; two step-sons, Winston Haynes of Dallas, Texas and Eric Haynes of Ada, Okla.; five sisters, Deloris Taylor of Los Angeles, Dorothy Abney And Edna Marie (Raymond) Sanders all of Detroit, Barbara Owens of Vacaville, Calif. and Gloria Longmire of Atmore; three brothers, James (Freddie) Anderson and James Edward Owens all of Detroit and Steve (Tonya Brown) Owens of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; three aunts, Earline Jacobs of Atmore, Dora Nell Martin of Hillside, N.J. and Nellie Mae Hines of Pensacola; one uncle, Eugene (Denise) Dennis of Detroit and a special cousin, Voncile Daughtry of Atmore; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and Zion Star AME Zion Church Family.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Zion Star AME Zion Church – Atmore with Rev. Jean Archie, Pastor, officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery.

Elkanah Montgomery, Sr.  

Mr. Elkanah Montgomery, Sr., age 90, of Perrine, Fla., passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019.

He was born in Atmore to the late Raymond and Minnie Montgomery.  He served twenty-years in the U.S. Army and Air Force and U.S. Postal Service for twenty five years. His las five years he worked as a security guard with a private company. His highest accomplishment was as a private pilot earning the achievement of being the first black man to fly solo into Atmore, Ala. He was a long serving member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, Miami, Fla. He was a cherished and admirable member of the Perrine Community, loved by all. When mankind saw the worst in people, he always saw the best.

Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife of fifty+ years, Nutien Montgomery; sister, Iola Montgomery; children, Elkanah, Jr (Deborah), Jacqueline, Marlita and Chaiwat (Rite); eighteen grandchildren, Mariah, Makayla, Christian, Asia, Alize, Sedrick, Amani, Amara, Chiante, Dmetrius, Zsamieko, Torianno, Poolsap, Matasha, Elkanah III, Candice, Rachel and Jacqueline; twelve great-grandchildren; special niece, Francetta; special cousin, Lisa and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Monroe Tucker, Jr., Pastor officiating. Interment followed in Stallworth Cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews and friends.

Floral attendants were family and friends.
