Atmore police were still on the scene at 6:30 a.m. of a fatal shooting that took place in the predawn hours of today (Tuesday, Sept. 24), on Jimbos Road, just about a block off Alabama 21, between Escambia County Middle School and Spudd’s convenience store.
Police Chief Chuck Brooks confirmed that the shooting was a homicide and promised more information on the incident as the investigation continues.
Brooks did not identify the shooting victim, but Debra Brooks said it was her son, 23-year-old Roderick Watkins, who was killed.
The victim’s body remained on the ground at the site where he apparently died as police awaited the arrival of the county medical examiner.
Atmore News will provide updates on this site and in this week’s print edition, which will be available late this afternoon.
