Mechanical issues bring train to halt in downtown

A CSX train continued at 2:45 p.m. Monday (September 23) to block traffic at numerous crossings in downtown Atmore.

Police Chief Chuck Brooks said the stranded train, which has been at a standstill for more than an hour, has “lost air pressure.” He said CSX has mechanics on the way to fix the problem and urged motorists to use patience.

A map on the CSX website indicates that crossings at Wilson Avenue, as well as those at Trammell, Main and Presley streets.

Traffic is backed up on all streets affected by the stalled train, although many motorists are finding their way around the blockage by taking long, circuitous routes.

No word was given as to how long the needed repairs might take.
