The Escambia County High School varsity baseball team has finally notched its first and second wins of the season by dismantling McIntosh, 16-1 and 23-0 on March 12.
Most of those who viewed the double-header wouldn’t guess that this was the same team that has struggled to claim its first win of the season.
Deavontae Johnson started things off on the mound for ECHS in the first game. Johnson struck out the first McIntosh batter, but gave up a single on the next pitch, followed by two walks. He was pulled, and Jabryce Hooks took over the pitching duties. giving up only one run and the only hit for McIntosh in the short two games, each of which was called due to the mercy rule.
When the Blue Devils came to bat, the hitting fest began. ECHS scored 14 runs during the first-inning and 2 runs during the second and last inning.
Johnson had a walk and scored 3 runs; Hooks walked twice and scored three times. Delarrion Poole, Jaylyn Lee, Noah Martin and Dimitri Wiggins each scored 2 runs, while Tyjerrious Malone and Charles Lambert each scored once.
ECHS continued its scoring spree in the second contest, scoring 23 runs in the first inning.
Poole, Johnson, and Malone each scored 3 runs; Hooks, Lee, Josh Hadley, Tyrus Moore, Wiggins, and Isaiah Finney scored two runs apiece, and Anthony McCants and Luerensley Williams each scored once.
After dismantling McIntosh, ECHS found themselves paired back up against W.S. Neal on March 14 but could not find the same beat as they did earlier in the week and fell by an 11-1 score.
Jabryce Hooks started on the mound for the Blue Devils but couldn’t hold off the Eagles, who took a 2-0 lead into the second-inning.
The Blue Devils failed to answer the Eagles and only scored one run, which came from Poole during the final inning of the game.
ECHS will face Williamson High on the road on Tuesday, April 2.
