Child sex offenders picked up for violations

Two Brewton men, both registered sex offenders who committed crimes against children, were arrested separately this week by county sheriff’s officers for violating the Sex Offenders Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

The first arrest came February 14 after Aaron Lee Hicks, 47, of a South Boulevard address, was seen working at C&C Auto Detailing on St. Nicholas Avenue in Brewton, which is adjacent to Jennings Park, where children regularly play.

Hicks reportedly failed to notify the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office that he was working at the location, which represented his third SORNA violation since 2015.

He was originally charged in Escambia County, Fla. with the sexual assault of two children under the age of 12. He was twice charged in Escambia County, Ala., for violations of notification and registration requirements. He was charged here on October 23, 2015 with a SORNA violation and again on Oct. 30, 2016 for residing in a house where a minor child less than 12 years of age also resides.

The second arrest was made February 16, when 30-year-old Danny Darrell Hayes of a Ball Lane address was taken into custody for failure to register after his release from the Escambia County Detention Center.

Hayes was convicted of sexual battery of a minor child (at least 12 years old but younger than 16), also in Escambia Co., Fla. in April 2012. Friday’s arrest was his second SORNA violation since June 20, 2016 in Escambia Co. Ala. Hayes was released from the county jail on February 6 and did not register with sheriff’s officials during the 12 days afterwards.
