Sixth graders Stacie Wilson and Maranda Singleton recently found a painted rock hidden just outside the door of one of their classrooms at Perdido Elementary / Middle School. Just how it made its way from Flomaton, Alabama to Perdido School is a bit of a mystery; but then that is the idea behind the fun. A little detective work discovered that the rock was previously found at the Bay Minette Skating Rink and brought to Perdido. Be on the lookout, as the rock was hidden again last weekend!
The idea is simple. People paint rocks bright colors or with short messages on them and hide them – preferably in plain sight – so that people find them. The person who finds the rock can take a photo of it or a selfie with the rock and post it to one of the many Facebook pages for “painted rock finds.” They can then choose to replace the rock with one they’ve painted or re-hide the rock they found.
What’s the appeal? Active members cite the joy of spending creative time with family and friends, of giving back and spending time in nature. And then there’s the age-old appeal of a treasure hunt: Families are walking streets, scouring local parks, searching trails and even climbing playground equipment to find a certain rock that was posted with a clue.
