For many area residents, lighting a candle is a tradition. Each year, the staffs of Johnson Quimby Funeral Home and Atmore Memorial Chapel hold a Candlelight Memorial Service during which the public is invited to come by Johnson Quimby and light a candle in memory of someone who passed away this year or in a previous year. Public servants make Christmas merrier
Christmas will be brighter thanks to a number of city employees. Atmore Police Department dispatcher Betty Cox is the founder and director of Change of Mind. Inc., a non-profit organization that ministers to the needs of children. Every year, Betty has a toy drive for kids who might not otherwise have such a good Christmas. The Escambia County High School Choir sang several selections at a VIP dinner and concert Tuesday, December 13. This was a fund-raising event for the choir’s New York trip – they’ve been invited to be part of a mass choir for a performance at Carnegie Hall next spring.
