Governor Robert Bentley announced on Friday, February 10, the appointment of Steven Marshall, former Marshall County District Attorney, as the new Alabama Attorney General. Marshall will fill the vacancy left by Luther Strange upon his appointment to the Unites States Senate.
Marshall, who was born in Atmore, is the nephew of Atmore resident Nancy Everette Helton. His parents, now deceased, were Conrad “Shine” and Mary Jo Everette Marshall. The Marshall family moved from Atmore when Steve was very young, and lived in several southern states. But, according to Nancy, he always considered Alabama home since this is where they came back to visit.
“I thought God had his hand on Steve a long time and had plans for him even through the tragedies of losing both his parents way too soon,” Nancy said. “Steve is quick to give God the credit for his success and for that I am thankful.”
Steve Marshall joins another Atmore native in a high state office – Lyn Lufkin Stuart is Acting Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
In a press release from Gov. Robert Bentley’s office last week, the governor had this to say about the new AG: “Steve is a well-respected District Attorney with impeccable credentials and strong conservative values. I know he will be a great Attorney General who will uphold the laws of this state and serve the people of Alabama with fairness. Steve has been instrumental in key legislation to protect Alabamians when it comes to opioid abuse, and I know he will continue to uphold the law as he serves as the state’s top law enforcement official.”
Nancy attended the swearing-in ceremony in Montgomery Monday, February 13, joining Steve’s wife Bridgette and daughter Faith.
According to Yellowhammer News, Marshall plans to crack down on human trafficking, opioid addition and sanctuary cities. Marshall was quoted as saying,
“Sanctuaries are places of worship, not places where laws are avoided.”
