Mayor to deliver flood relief donations

Residents of Atmore and the surrounding area who want to help Texans affected by the massive flooding generated by Hurricane Harvey can do so by bringing their donations to Atmore City Hall.

Hoods Discount Home Centers, which has stores in Foley, Theodore and Gulfport, Miss., is collecting bottled water, non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items for delivery to the Lone Star State.

The National Weather Service has reported that 30 inches of rain have fallen in Harris County, Texas, of which Houston is the county seat. At least 10 people have lost their lives in the natural disaster.

Mayor Jim Staff announced Monday that he would be taking donated supplies to the Foley collection center on Friday.

“If anybody wants to get some stuff together to send, I’ll be going down there this Friday,” Staff said after Monday’s city council meeting. “If anybody wants to donate items, they can drop them off at city hall, and I’ll take care of getting them down there.”

Along with water and non-perishable food, among the items most desperately needed by flood victims are

* cleaning supplies, including bleach, mold remover, Clorox wipes, buckets, and mops.

* paper products, including toilet tissue, paper towels, paper plates and plastic cutlery.

* hygiene products, including soap, shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes, deodorant and feminine products.

* diapers (for children and the elderly) and other baby items.

* pet food and supplies, including bowls, cat litter and collars.

* batteries and flashlights.

* gift cards (Walmart, etc.).

* medicine and other first aid supplies.

A spokesman for Hoods Discount Home Centers said monetary donations would also be accepted, but clothing donations are not being accepted at this time.
