Judi Lynn McElhaney

Mrs. Judi Lynn McElhaney, age 75, of Bratt,  Fla. passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2025 in Pensacola, Fla.  She was born in Atmore, Ala. to Buford “Bob” and Mildred Gibson Howell.  She graduated from Escambia High School in Pensacola.  She was a member of Poarch Band of Creek Indians and Grace Fellowship Church.  She was employed as a cosmetologist, teacher’s aide and dental assistant and before retiring was a data clerk with PCI Enterprises. She cherished her family and treasured the time she spent with her precious grandchildren. She was a generous person with a servant’s heart all because of her relationship with Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings, Jimmy Howell, Dawn Howell Davis, Phyllis Howell Miller, Ronald Howell and her grandson, Josiah Paul McElhaney.

Mrs. McElhaney is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, James “Mac” C. McElhaney, Jr.; her son, Joshua McElhaney of Bratt; her daughters, Candice McElhaney Dawe of Spanish Fort, Ala. and Stephani McElhaney Penn of Granite City, Ill.; her grandchildren., Claire, Lily, Jabe, James, Libby, Lucy, Landry, Jesse, Marlee and Maevree, along with numerous family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at Grace Fellowship Church with Rev. Corey Penn, Pastor Gene King and Pastor Glenn Weber officiating. Interment will follow in Bratt-Godwin Cemetery in Bratt.

Active pallbearers will be Jabe Dawe, James McElhaney, Jesse McElhaney, Ronny Miller, Trevor Knighten, Chris McElhaney, Denver Schrock and Jake Penner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Ward, David Johnson, Ronnie Stabler, Calvin Schrock, Jim Weber, Curvin Hursh, Lester Huber, and James Helton.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11:30 a.m. at Grace Fellowship Church.

Donald Ray Jackson

Mr. Donald Ray Jackson, age 58, of Walnut Hill, Fla. passed away Thursday, January 2, 2025 at his residence.  He was born in Atmore, Ala.  He was a truck driver most of his life and loved watching football.  

He was preceded in death by his step-father, Eddie Wayne Boggs.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his mother, Corine Thomas Boggs; his siblings, Susan Boggs and Sarah (Marti) Pearson Hartselle, Ala., both of Hartselle, Ala., Clara (P.J.) Thomas of Walnut Hill., Carrie Ellingsworth and Gail Ellingsworth, both of Ore.; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at Noon at Pine Barren Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Don Sanks officiating.  Interment will follow in Pine Barren Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be P.J. Thomas, Joshua Muse, Joseph Muse, Matthew Boggs, Chris Roberts and Barry Montgomery.

Ersel Lee Brackin

Mrs. Ersel Lee Brackin, age 85, of Munson, Fla., passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2024. She was born in Escambia County, Ala. She graduated from Atmore High School. She was a retired Monsato employee with 20 years of service. She was also a member of Blackwater Baptist Church in Munson. She loved cooking, sewing, crocheting and summers at their cabin in Northwest Montana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Maggie Dorriety; brothers, James Edward Dorriety, Curtis Lavonne Dorriety, Jerry Wayne Dorriety, Ervin Dorriety and Joe Dorriety; sisters, Daisy Mills, Arvie Jean Jones and Gladys Flowers.

Mrs. Brackin is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Roy Brackin of Munson; a son,  Max (Brenda) Brackin of Pulaski, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Kristen Lee (Jamie) Hagood of Pulaski; three great-grandchildren, Lexi, Lauren and Roy James (due June 2025); sisters, Elizabeth (George) Lundy of Semirah Springs, Ala., Doris (James) Lewis of Milton, Fla., Betty Weaver of Boonville, Ala.: brothers, Billie (Connie) Dorriety of Atmore, AL, Charles Dorriety of Robinsonville, AL; and many nieces and nephews.

A Visitation for immediate family will be held at 10:30-11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2024 at Lewis Funeral Home Jay Cornerstone Chapel, 4003 Highway 4 Jay, Florida 32565 with a visitation for friends and family from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. A graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Huxford Cemetery, Huxford Baptist Church, Huxford, Alabama 36543.

Haskell Dunn

Dunn

Mr. H. Haskell Dunn, age 83, of Chelsea, Ala. passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024 from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Milford, Delaware to Ruth and Rolen Dunn but lived most of his life in Alabama. He was a 1960 graduate of Vigor High School in Prichard, Ala. From there he went straight into the Marine Corps. where he spent 4 yrs. After that he went back to his hometown, Mobile, Ala. Soon after our move he surrendered his life to Jesus and sensed God’s calling on his life. He shortly surrendered to his calling into full time ministry. He felt the need to go to college and further his education to help him be prepared for whatever God called him to do. He chose Mobile College (University of Mobile) and graduated from there in 1984. He went on to serve churches in AL, MS, KY, OH and FL before retiring from church staff. He spent his last years of ministry in Music Evangelism and pastoral care before retiring again. He was a minister for over 45 years. He also worked as a volunteer in prison ministry under the We Care Program in Atmore, Ala. He was a minister but always a Marine. A former pastor and friend said “he was one of the Few Good Men that every Pastor needs”. He was a man that loved God, his family and country. He loved people and he shared Jesus with everyone he came in contact with.

Mr. Dunn is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Faye; two children, Terri (Deborah LaRussa) and Mike (Laurie); eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Terri’s pet name for her Dad was “Rock Star” because it seemed everyone knew him no matter where he went.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 2025 at Noon at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home 6040 Three Notch Rd. Mobile, AL 36619, (251-661-7700) with graveside following at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, January 6, 2025 at 11 a.m. prior to service.

James Earl Sermons 

Mr. James Earl Sermons, known as “Jim” to his family and friends, age 82, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025 at his home after a brief battle with renal cancer. He was a graduate of Tate High School and was a member of Celebration Church of Saraland. He was an entrepreneur, with an eye for detail which he used to remodel and restore homes.  He enjoyed visiting the beaches of Mississippi and mountains of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John William and Nellie Katherine Summerlin Sermons; his brothers, Gerald Sermons and Donald Sermons; his best friend and brother-in-law, Robert Edwin Miller.

Mr. Sermons is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Linda Sermons; together, they share a daughter, Victoria Sermons Buford (Jonathan) of Prattville, Ala. and also survived by two other children, Damon Andrew and Ivy Burleson; his sister, Margaret Miller as well as several other grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at Noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wesley Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore, AL.

Active pallbearers will be Terry Miller, Billy Miller, Wayne Faircloth, Bryon Cook, Josh Hall, Keith Morgan, Terry Pritchett, Gary Bryan and Carl Warren.

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Bovee, Vincent Glozier, Robert Talmadge and Jerry Mason.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 8, 2025 from 11 a.m. until service time of Noon at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Torrey Gomila Swift

Torrey Gomila Swift, age 73, of Orange Beach, Ala. passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025 in Foley, Ala.  She was born in Mobile, Ala. to the late Arthur Joseph Gomila and Emily “Tuttie” Bates Gomila.  She was a 1970 graduate of Escambia County High School and attended the University of South Alabama. She had a gracious and forgiving heart.  She enjoyed helping others, and cherished the time she spent cooking and hosting her family and friends, and being everyone’s mom. She loved spending time with her grandkids whom she named Honey Bunny, Little Miss Sunshine, and My Little Boy. She was known by her grandkids as ‘Keke” and as “Great” by her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Arthur Joseph Gomila, Jr.

Ms. Swift is survived by her sister, Marshall Gomila (Doug) Rogers; her daughters, Emily Page Swift and Susan Swift (Alex) Hammond; her grandchildren, Hadley, Charlee and Swift Hammond; her niece and nephew, Charles Lamar (Julie) Bryan, Jr. and Layne Bryan (Aaron) Abee; her great-nephews and niece, Jackson Bryan, Thompson Bryan, Conrad Abee and Bella Abee along with many family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore, Ala. with Father Sasa Turkic officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Paul N. Yoder

Mr. Paul N. Yoder, age 79, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Sunday, January 5, 2025. He was born on September 23, 194 in Dundee, Ohio to Noah and Ida Miller Yoder. He was an avid collector of old things and loved Braves baseball and Alabama football.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roman Yoder.

Mr. Yoder is survived by his siblings, John (Brenda) Yoder, Miriam Classen, Barbara (James) Ward and numerous family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Kyle officiating.
