A string of violent incidents that had plagued the city for two months continued Monday night (December 30) as the clock ticked off the final hours of 2024. And it continued in a familiar location.
Atmore Police Department (APD) reports show that an Atmore man whose identity has not yet been released was shot once with a high-powered rifle on Ashley Street, a few blocks east of Happy Stores, a local mini market most widely known as the former Mike & Ike Food Store.
APD detectives were still gathering evidence and talking to witnesses early Tuesday, December 31. No arrest had been made by 11 a.m. Tuesday.
According to reports, police were sent to the 100 block of Ashley Street around 11:13 p.m. after emergency dispatchers relayed “numerous phone calls” from individuals who reported shots being fired in the area.
Officers arrived to find a male with a single gunshot wound to his lower extremities (somewhere between the hips and toes). The wounded man was taken by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses told police the shooting victim was sitting in his car when the suspect or suspects began firing into the vehicle. Approximately 20 .223-caliber shell casings were recovered from the scene, police said.
The same scenario played out December 8, when two Atmore men —Juwan McNeal, 25 and Joe Jones Jr., 27 — were shot several times as they sat in a vehicle along Ashley Street. Both were dead when police arrived.
APD detectives urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 251-368-9141.
