A 23-year-old Atmore man was arrested Monday (September 30) and charged with the late Saturday shooting of another man in the parking lot of a local convenience store.
Atmore Police Department investigators were able to obtain positive identification that Edward La’Marlon Jaheim Williams was the man who did the shooting. APD officers took Williams into custody at 1:35 p.m. Monday at a local residence.
Williams remained in the Escambia County Detention Center early Tuesday, October 1, awaiting a bond hearing. He is charged with one count of attempted murder.
According to police reports, APD officers were sent around 11:55 p.m. to Atmore Community Hospital, where medical staff reported that a gunshot victim was being treated in the hospital’s emergency center after having been brought there in a private vehicle.
Police said the as-yet-unidentified victim was shot once with a 9mm handgun during a physical altercation that took place in the parking lot of Mike and Ike Food Mart, at the intersection of Carver Avenue and Ashley Street.
Police have not revealed what started the altercation that led Williams to pull his gun and shoot the other man.
The victim was given preliminary treatment at the local hospital, then flown by helicopter to an undisclosed area trauma center.
APD Sgt. Darrell McMann reported Monday that the victim was in critical condition in the intensive care unit of the area hospital and said Tuesday morning the man was “still in serious condition.”
At last report, the investigation was ongoing as city detectives continued to gather evidence.
