Every year, the Leadership Atmore class adopts a class project. This year, Leadership Atmore 2024 identified a community-wide need and saw it through to the end Thursday, September 5.
The class donated a flag retirement box to Legion Post 90 in Atmore. The box sits under the pavilion behind the building on the corner of Main and Church streets, and the box is accessible at all times.
Leadership class members were joined by several members of the Legion for the presentation.
Leadership Atmore 2024 President Ryan Chason talked about the efforts to find and create such a box, but that the class “wanted to bring this to Atmore.”
Post 90 Commander Billy Elder thanked the class and everyone who attended the presentation.
Chason also gave Elder a plaque to place on the retirement box and the key to empty the box when needed.
“Thank you guys for your service to our country,” Chason said.
Program coordinator Dawn Vaughn posted on social media that afternoon, “I couldn’t be more proud of this class today, as they dedicated the flag retirement box to the American Legion. We had several individuals that came to properly retire old flags. If I counted correctly, 10 flags were placed in the box.”
Indeed, folks brought flags to put in the box. Amy Cabaniss was the first, followed by Sheilo Faircloth who had several flags.
