Flame still burning
Atmore Fire Chief Ron Peebles and wife Darlene celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary March 30. Darlene, who is the nurse for Dr. Marc Saunders, the city’s newest physician, said the secret to keeping the fire burning for such a long time is that she “raised” her husband. Ron said, “that’s probably correct, but it could go either way.” The couple has four children — Brittany (Scarborough), Courtney (Snider), Trent and Reagan, as well as five grandchildren — Maddie Grace, Griffin, Mary, Caroline and Jack Lincoln.
Cheer squads named
Escambia County High School (ECHS) cheerleading sponsor Vernametres McCracklin announced last week that she has chosen the 2023-24 cheer squads, which will feature eight varsity members and eight junior varsity members. On the sidelines at varsity games will be Tiarra Lee (Captain), Zion Salter, Aurianna Knight, Calea Bolar, Ziyonah Moye, Briyana Milton, Janyria Dortch and Anyia McCants. The JV squad will consist of Janae Dillard (Captain), Shamarie Hands, Amya Johnson, TyKenya Staples, Lyric Hetherington, Angel Crenshaw, Katia Salter and Zyriah Finklea.
Spring bake
Spring Break was likely on the minds of most area high school students, but it was the ECHS’s Culinary Arts program’s Spring Bake that earned eight individuals designation as winners in the school’s recent Spring Baking Competition.They were Trinity Bush, Ariyana Young, Zyrihanna Thomas, Mrs. Camille Minaya, Isabella McGee, Keonte Blue, Shayla Taylor and John Jones. Support for the competition came from Elliott Faircloth and family, Popeye’s, First National Bank & Trust and Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce.
New animal shelter
Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff Heath Jackson, District 1 County Commissioner Steven Dickey and Brewton Mayor Yank Lovelace were each on hand for the March 28 open house event at the new, county-funded animal shelter in Brewton. The sheriff said the facility, which will be known as Escambia County Alabama Animal Control Shelter, will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, Monday-Friday. He said it is located “along the four-lane (U.S. 31), just north of the paper mill.”
’23-24 Devilettes
ECHS announced last week the 12 members of the 2023-24 Sensational Devilettes color guard. Members are Luther Moore (Captain); NaAsia Reynolds (Co-Captain); Tenya Brown; Shontia Martin; Nykeria Staples; Nalayla Kidd; Chloe Dawson; Kameria Parker; Shameshia America; Mariah Leslie; and Auria Scott. Latabitha Burt was named the group’s alternate and its runner.
