Ramadan in the desert
James McNeil Jr., son of Atmore businessman James McNeil and nephew of Charles and Atmore City Councilwoman Eunice Johnson, recently celebrated Ramadan in the United Arab Emirates. James and a friend stayed at the Shangri-La Dubai and visited sites such as the emirate’s Grand Mosque, enjoyed a desert safari and observed the Islamic holiday period, which calls for a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.
One track mind
Emily Rolin, daughter of Alex and Sissy Rolin of McCullough, continues to shine on the track for J.U. Blacksher’s girls team. Emily, a seventh grader competing on the varsity squad, placed second in the long jump and third in the triple jump during a recent seven-team meet. She also ran a leg of the school’s 4x400m relay team that finished third. Emily is the maternal granddaughter of Bubba and Cindy Tedder of McCullough, and the fraternal granddaughter of Esther and the late Norman Rolin of Poarch. She is the great-granddaughter of W.A. Boutwell of McCullough.
New infantryman
Former Atmore resident John David Dorriety, a graduate of Northview High, and his wife, Candace Maria Dorriety, were on hand for the recent U.S. Army Infantry Regiment Graduation ceremony at Ft. Benning, Ga. Their son, Zach Tschannen, was a graduate, and Candace got to attach his infantry pin to his uniform. The Dorriety family now lives in Warner Robins, Ga.
Reeling ’em in
Lagan Rolin, son of Alex and Sissy Rolin of McCullough and brother of JUB track athlete Emily Rolin, landed a 3.07-pound bass, the largest he and partner Mason McGhee caught during a recent high school fishing tournament at Lake Martin. The JUB anglers landed three fish that weighed a total of 5.52 pounds, although one was dead and cost them a .25-pound penalty.
