Atmore police recently announced the March 2 arrest of an Atmore man accused of cutting his girlfriend with a knife and threatening to kill her if she tried to leave his residence.
APD Sgt. Darrell McMann said a woman came to the Atmore Police Department around 8:20 a.m. that day and reported that her boyfriend, 27-year-old Desha Jenkins, cut her with a knife during a domestic incident that occurred the night before (March 1).
She said Jenkins told her he would kill her if she tried to leave and continued threatening her throughout the night.
The victim told officers Jenkins grabbed her by the throat and choked her, and an officer noticed bruising around both sides of her neck. She also explained that she couldn’t call police because Jenkins took her phone.
She said she left the residence when she realized Jenkins was sleeping.
Officers contacted Jenkins at his residence on King Street and placed him under arrest on one count each of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree domestic violence-assault; second-degree domestic violence-strangulation, and aggravated assault with a knife.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital, where she was treated and released. Jenkins also is under a hold from Community Corrections. He was processed into the Escambia County Detention Center, where he remained early Tuesday, March 14, without bond.
According to the jail website, Jenkins was arrested in 2019 on similar charges — one count each of first-degree kidnapping, felony domestic violence (strangulation) and interference with a domestic violence emergency call.
