Ghana-bound
Atmore native Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, noted for her work with TIME magazine, Morehouse College and the Nobel Prize Museum in Sweden, is headed to Accra, Republic of Ghana, in West Africa, to work with the Du Bois Museum Foundation in preserving the home and personal library of W.E.B. Du Bois, an American sociologist, historian, author, editor, and activist who helped create the NAACP. Dr. Sims-Alvarado, a former model known as “the Historian in Heels,” holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media Arts and a master’s degree in African and African American Studies from Clark Atlanta University, along with a Ph.D. in History from Georgia State University.
Another feather
Escambia County High School’s wrestling program got another feather in its cap over the past weekend when two Blue Devils grapplers finished in the Top 5 in the Class 1A-4A state wrestling championships. Elijah Thomas posted a third-place showing in the 152-pound weight class to end his season with a 43-4 record. Mason Huggins was fifth in the 170-pound class and wound up with a 29-10 season record. Tyanthony Dailey also competed in the state tournament and finished the season at 26-12.
Gliding along
Coastal Soaring Association, a group of glider pilots formerly headquartered in Pensacola, has reportedly relocated to Atmore Municipal Airport and is flying from there every Saturday. The move is due mainly to the preponderance of military and civilian aviation in the coastal area. Pilots of the sailplanes, which are towed skyward by regular aircraft, reportedly offer 30-minute rides for $15 (or $30 for longer rides). Residents might have noticed a number of the aircraft soaring above Atmore last weekend.
Valentine’s baskets
A shout-out to Nicole Jones, Marlo Young, Cordia Lee and the youngsters of Prima Girl. The group of mentored females, ages 10-18, partnered with Felecia Bradley-McMillan and Celebration of Life to make Valentine’s baskets that were distributed to 22 local churches, each of which presented them to two elderly members.
Sign-ups end soon
Registration will end Friday, March 3, for youngsters ages 4-12 who plan to participate in the local Cal Ripken Baseball or Babe Ruth Softball programs this year. Sign-ups are held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday, until the deadline at Atmore Public Library, 700 East Church Street. Practices will begin March 6; games will begin April 3. A registration fee of $40 is required for each player in six age groups: tee-ball (ages 4-6); coach-pitch and player-pitch baseball (ages 9-10), and major-league 70 baseball (ages 11 or 12).
