An Atmore teen was arrested and taken to an area juvenile detention center after being charged with the fatal Monday night shooting of his 16-year-old girlfriend, a student athlete at Escambia County High School.
Sgt. Darrell McMann said city police were sent around 10 p.m. to Atmore Community Hospital in response to a reported shooting. The incident occurred inside a vehicle that was parked at or near Mike & Ike Food Market, at the corner of Carver and Ashley streets, just a short distance from APD headquarters.
They arrived to find that a teenage girl — later identified as Janyia Wilson, a sophomore volleyball player at ECHS — had been shot and had been taken to Atmore Community Hospital by her boyfriend.
Police officers converged on the hospital and placed yellow crime scene tape around the car in which the shooting victim was taken to the hospital.
ACH medical staff told police the teen was unresponsive when she arrived at the hospital, and emergency department staff were unable to save her.
The juvenile suspect was arrested by APD investigators and charged with murder.
The young victim is the daughter of Mary “Camille” Johnson of Atmore.
The investigation into the homicide is ongoing, McMann said.
