Escambia County High School has suffered yet another tragedy. Less than six months after the passing of ECHS football and basketball coach John Shears, it was confirmed last week by ECHS’s athletic coordinator Scott Mason that ECHS football coach, former baseball coach and head girls basketball coach, Kasuan D. Bullard, 39, was killed in a two-vehicle traffic accident Monday (Aug. 2) on Cochran Causeway in Mobile, Ala.
According to reports, the preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim was attempting to make a U-turn when his vehicle collided with a dump truck. When emergency crews arrived on scene, they discovered an unresponsive male victim. The driver of the dump truck was transported to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
According to Mason, Bullard was slated to start the 2021 football season as the Blue Devils defensive coordinator.
“This is another major blow,” Mason said. “Bullard was best friends with the late Shears and was someone the kids looked up to highly. He was always ready to help the kids in any way necessary. This is just yet another blow to our school and it hurts.”
Bullard is survived by his wife Giovauna Bullard, and children, Giana Bullard and Kasuan Bullard.
After Bullard’s death, Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson issued a press release stating that arrest warrants were obtained for Bullard following an investigation that began in mid-June at ECHS. Bullard was charged with rape 1st degree and sexual contact with a student under the age of 19. Bullard was supposed to surrender to the Sheriff’s Office on August 2, but was killed in a car crash in Mobile that morning.
