Jethro Dailey, Sr.

Dailey

Mr. Jethro Dailey, Sr., age 96, of Atmore, Ala. (Freemanville Community), passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at North Baldwin Infirmary in Bay Minette Ala. He was born in Satsuma, Ala. to Callie Grace and Ervin Dailey. He was retired from Monsanto Chemical Company and spent his later years serving as a volunteer fireman with the Poarch Fire Dept. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, farming, raising livestock, an avid Atlanta Braves fan, as well as an Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He was a longtime member of the Mt. Gillead Baptist Church (Freemanville) for over fifty years, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. He also was a Master Mason, Worshipful Master, Royal Arch-High Priest, Knight Temple, Consistory-Lutnute, Shriner – 1st Ceremony master, Imperial Council, United Supreme Council 33rd degree, member of the Atmore Community male chorus, member of the Laymen Department is the Bethlehem District Baptist Association. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of sixty seven years, Lizzie Mae Dailey; second oldest of  children, Clarice “PeeWee” Dailey, who passed away just eight days prior to his demise; nine siblings; brothers, Eddie Lee Dailey, Ester Dailey, and Marcellous Dailey; six sisters, Elizabeth Smith, Ardella Packer, Geraldine Lewis, Jeanette Coleman, Marie McPherson, and Carrie Lee Dailey.

Mr. Dailey is survived by seven daughters, Evelyn G. Akers, Zernice Valerie, Mildred (Cleve) McKenzie, Neva Taylor, and Nerissa La Tongia Tucker, all of Atmore, Mary Dailey and Wilhelmina Hellman, both of Huntsville, Ala.; three sons, Jethro (Jami) Dailey, Jr. of Huntsville,  Rickey Dailey and Erwin (LaVon) Dailey, all of Atmore; two sisters, Reather Quarker and Alma Staples, both of Atmore; one brother, McKinley (Gola Mae) Dailey of Atmore and a host of grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren 

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Danny Benjamin officiating.

Kenneth “Kenny” Lavone Slater

Slater

Mr. Kenneth “Kenny” Lavone Slater, age 64, of Molino, Fla. passed away Monday, July 27, 2020 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Flomaton, Ala. He worked for Vanity Fair for fifteen years and eventually retired from Pat’s Flag Car Service in 2014.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Slater; mother, Lillie Slater and sister, Linda Peacock.

Mr. Slater is survived by his sons, Chris (Jessica) Slater and Scott (Tasha) Slater, both of Milton, Fla.; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Madelyn, Skylar and Rae and Grace and Hunter; sister, Clara Bonner of Needham, Ala.; brother, Gerald (Flo) Cofield of Flomaton and also many nieces and nephews and special friends.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Traveler’s Rest Cemetery in Flomaton with Pastor Ben James of Mt. Sterling Baptist Church (Butler, AL) officiating.

Helon Ardiel Gee Morgan

Mrs. Ardiel G. Morgan, age 94, of Headland, Ala., formerly of Walnut Hill, Fla., passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at Westside Terrace Healthcare, Dothan, Ala. She was born in Baldwin County, Ala. to the late James Leslie Gee and Flarie Slay Gee. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She was an active member of the Assemblies of God church for many years, teaching Sunday school, serving as president of the WMC’s, and at times choir director. She was also active in the youth ministries of the church. She was a member of First Assembly of God in Atmore.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of sixty-four years, James H. Morgan and a Mrs. Morgan is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donnie D. and Linda Baggette of Headland; one granddaughter, Kimberly B. Conner and her husband, Dr. Ryan of Dothan; one grandson, Shannon R. Baggette and his wife, Kellie of Mexia, Ala.; four great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson, a niece, nephew, and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 31, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Walnut Hill Baptist Cemetery in Walnut Hill. The service will be conducted by Doug Waters and musical selections will be by Haley Baggette.

Margaret Marilyn Caraway Ellis

Mrs. Margaret Marilyn Caraway Ellis, age 82, wife of Cecil Edward Ellis, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery, Ala. She was born in Atmore to Mable Hogan and the late James Orville Caraway. She was a 1956 graduate of Escambia County High School. She was a member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church where she served as a member of the choir and teaching children’s Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She spent her life raising her four children, and caring for her husband. She lived a life that radiated her love for the Lord putting the needs of others above her own and could always put a smile on anyone’s face, whether a friend or stranger.   

She is preceded in death by her sister, Melba Caraway. 

Mrs. Ellis is survived by her husband, Cecil of Atmore; her mother, Mable of Atmore, her two sons and two daughters, Kathy (Tony) Trawick of Lakeland, Fla., Rob (Sonya) Ellis of Atmore, David Ellis of Jacksonville, Fla and Jill (Lance) Tatum of Montgomery, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Kelley) Trawick, Brittany Trawick, Rachel Ellis (Rob) Lindell, Blake and Zachary Ellis, and Zoe and Thad Tatum; two great-grandchildren, Harper and Hudson Lindell; her brother, William “Bill” (Becky) Caraway of Mobile, Ala. and sister, Mary Beth Hogan (David) Keith of Millbrook, Ala.

Her life will be celebrated at a private, graveside service at Serenity Gardens in Atmore. 

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to your local animal shelter, as a tribute to her love for animals.

Charles “Billy” Dole

Dole

Mr. Charles “Billy” Dole, age 80, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020 in Pensacola, Fla. He was a native and life-long resident of Century, Fla. He was the best dad, grandfather, friend to all, loved the Florida Gators, spending time with his family, touched many lives and was a jokester. He never met someone that he couldn’t make out of a friend. His smile and jokes could light up a room. His selfless acts over the years were a testament to his character. He was employed with Century Pharmacy for fifty-six years and a member of the Beulah Chapel Assembly of God Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Eva Dole; sister, Eva Jo Dole; two brothers, Dickie Dole and Ed Dole; son, Donald Ray Franklin and great-granddaughter, Jaylynn Nicole Franklin.
Mr. Dole is survived by the mother of his children, Nell Franklin of Flomaton, Ala.; two sons, Michael Dewayne (Loretta) Franklin and Bobby Ray (Jacqueline) Franklin, all of Flomaton; one daughter, Angie Dole of Flomaton; one sister, Myra Jean (Charles) Steadham of Atmore, Ala.; one sister-in-law, Carol Dole of Century; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two nieces, Sherry Diamond and Carrie Bryan; one nephew, Eric Steadham; five great-nieces and nephews and his work family at Century Pharmacy.
A memorial wake will be held Sunday, August 2, 2020 from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
A larger gathering and memorial will be held at a later date as conditions improve around Covid-19.

Robert Lee Parker

Mr. Robert Lee Parker, age 91, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020 in Pensacola, Fla. He was a native and lifelong resident of Rabun, Ala. He was an accomplished farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-eight years, Melba Virginia Parker; son, Larry Robert Parker and great-granddaughter, Meagan Meyers. 

Mr. Parker is survived by three sons, Russell (Helen) Parker, Jeff (Brenda) Parker and Shane (Katie) Parker, all of Rabun; one daughter, Annette Thomley of Rabun; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. 

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 3, 2020 at 2 p.m. at RHeabun Church of God with Bro. Jim Sowell and Bro. Randal Short officiating. Burial will follow at Guy’s Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 2, 2020 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

William “Don” Donell Conway

Mr. William “Don” Donell Conway, age 71, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020. He was born in Escambia County, Ala. to the late William Alvin Conway and Shirley Luverne Flowers Conway Hadley. He was the owner and operator of Conway Gravel Hauling and worked in the oil field

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Ann Conway; his parents; one sister, Elaine Brewton and one brother, Wendall Conway.

Mr. Conway is survived by one sister, Earline (Gilbert) Wall of Atmore and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Bro. Thurl Pearson officiating.

Active pallbearers with be John Brewton, Ron Phillips, Bill Walker, Billy Walker, Eugene Rackard, Ernest Rolin and Blake Pearson.

Bonnie Mae Peebles

Mrs. Bonnie Mae Peebles, age 76, passed away Friday, July 31, 2020 in Pensacola, Fla. She was a native and lifelong resident of Bratt, Fla. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was a member of Bratt Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Leroy Peebles; parents, Coy and Willie Mae Gunn; sister, Dorothy Peebles; brother, Lonnie Ray Gunn and two half-brothers, Wilton Ledkins and Alton Ledkins.
Mrs. Peebles is survived by three sons, Tony (Rhonda) Peebles of Robinsonville, Ala., Darin Peebles of Bratt and Phillip (Cynthia) Peebles of Andalusia, Ala.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Barry George officiating. Burial will follow at Godwin Cemetery.

Mr. Jimmy Daniel “Boone” Wood, age 48, passed away Friday, July 31, 2020 in Pensacola, Fla.
He was a native and former resident of Century, Fla. and had resided in Jay, Fla. for the past twenty-two years. He was a 1991 graduate of Century High School and a member of the Ebenezer Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Oscar W. and Bertha Lee Wood and James and Sybil Ratliff and brother, James O. Wood.
Mr. Wood is survived by his father, Jimmy (Glenda) Wood of Jay, Fla.; mother, Patty Faye Inman of Jay; two sisters, Evelyn (Cliff) Emmons of Flomaton, Ala. and Belinda (Daniel) Morgan of Atmore, Ala and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the Ebenezer Church with Bro. Bobby Carnley officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Church Cemetery.

Kenneth “Kenny” L. Curry, Sr.

Curry

Mr. Kenneth “Kenny” L. Curry, Sr., 48, of Atmore fell asleep in the arms of Jesus on Sat., July 25, 2020 at his residence.

He was a native of Walnut Hill, FL, where his early schooling was at Ernest Ward School before he completed his schooling at Escambia Co. High School in 1990. His early Christian journey begin at Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church – Nokomis Community and he later became a member of Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center.  Kenny an avid gospel singer for 30 years, singing with The Gospel Harmonizers, the Visionaires, and the Gospel Keys. He also was had been employed at Standard Furniture, Masland Carpets, and Atmore Work Release with Alabama Department of corrections. He was presently employed at Baldwin County Juvenile Detention Center – Bay Minette and had been a barber for over 30 years and was a barber at D&G’s Finest Cuts in Atmore. Kenny was an advid Philadelphia Eagles and Alabama Crimson Tide fan.

Those whom he has joined in eternity are his father, Woodrow Curry, Jr., his grandfather, Henry Fountain and grandparents, Rosie Mae and Woodrow Curry, Sr.

Those left to cherish beautiful memories of his life include his devoted wife, Gasha L. Williams -Curry; (4) daughters, Takendra Ingram, Tieka North, Jasmine Curry, MarDaizah Salter; (2) sons, Kenny Curry, Jr. and Ty’Hyeem Curry; his mother, Cathion Fountain Curry; (5) sisters, Marsha Curry, Lakeisha Findlay, Asterra Riley, Shekethia Dailey, and Angela (Winston) Barron, his grandmother, Mother Nancy Fountain; 6 grandchildren, his mother in law, Ms. Daisy Mae Williams, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws, with special cousins, O’Neil Crenshaw, Leon Crenshaw, Dennis George, Winston Barron, Winston Crenshaw, Jerry Redmond, Jr., Clifford Moorer, and Danny Crenshaw. 

Funeral service was held on the grounds of Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center with Bishop Darryl North officiating. Inhumation was in Mt. Shiloh Cemetery (Nokomis) with TURNER FUNERAL CHAPEL directing.

Mr. Will Amos, age 67, passed away Friday, July 31, 2020 in Atmore, Ala. He was a native and lifelong resident of Atmore. He was employed with the State of Alabama, carpenter for Thomas and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gladys Amos; brother, James O’Neal Amos and grandparents, Royal and Rosie Johnson.
Mr. Amos is survived by his three brothers, Thomas (Pam) Amos of Atmore, Carlton Amos of Dyas, Ala. and Clifford Amos of Biloxi, Miss.; three sisters, Carolyn (Jimmy) Jackson, Bernice (Joe) Pace of Nokomis, AL and Bertha Dean of Atmore, AL. and Bertha Dean of Atmore

Amorette Dykes Reece

Ms. Amorette Dykes Reece, 98, formerly of Brewton, Ala., passed away Friday, July 31, 2020 at her residence in Hoover, Ala. where she has lived since 2013. A native of Andalusia, Ala. she was the sixth of nine children born to Wilson H. and Annie Murphy Dykes. She was a 1940 graduate of Andalusia High School where she was the class salutatorian.

Coming to Brewton in 1943, she was active in the First Assembly of God on Harold Street in East Brewton. In the 1950s she was active in the founding of the Rock Hill Assembly of God on Ridge Road. In both churches she served as pianist, Sunday school teacher, and prayer warrior. In retirement she again served as a teacher in First Assembly of God.
On November 1, 1951, Ms. Reece began her career with the Escambia County Hospital on Douglas Avenue in Brewton as the bookkeeper. When the hospital moved to its present location as D. W. McMillan Memorial Hospital in 1954, she continued as bookkeeper and later as head of the business department until her retirement in 1988. In addition to her duties with the hospital, she worked closely with the treasurer of the Escambia County Hospital Authority, a part-time position which she held until 2001. When she fully retired, Ms. Reece had completed fifty years of service to the hospital and the hospital authority of Escambia County. She served under the leadership of hospital administrators Hart, Boone, O’Pry, Wickham, and Griffin.
The loves of Amorette Reece’s life were Jesus Christ and His church, her family, and the hospital. She was a true Christian disciple, devoted mother, and loyal employee. Hers was the heart of a servant, and she touched many lives for the good.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Tommy Reece and seven siblings. 

Ms. Reece is survived by her son, Jim (Mary) Reece of Hoover; daughter-in-law, Linda Reece of Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Charles (Margaret) Dykes of McCalla, Ala., grandchildren, April Reece (Jason) Gordon of Hixson, Tenn., David (Courtney) Reece of Owens Cross Roads, Ala., Brandon (Beth) Reece of Gardendale, Ala. and Tim Reece of Mt. Olive, Miss; great-grandsons, Jackson and Anderson Reece of Owens Cross Roads, Bryson Reece of Gardendale and special friends, Carolyn Merchant, Kathleen Still Peevy, Boots Reed, and Melody Dearmon.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 4 at 2:30 p.m. in Union Cemetery in Brewton with Reverends Jim Reece, Jean Spikes and Mike Roberts officiating. 

Pallbearers will be Butch Stokes, Tommy Green, Joe Guster, Phil Parker, Greg Carter and Jason Gordon.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given in memory of Ms. Reece to the Greater Brewton Foundation or to a charity of choice.

Zena Simon of Bay Minette, Ala., passed away Monday, July 27, 2020 at Thomas Hospital, Fairhope, Ala.

Evelyn D. Lovelace

Mrs. Evelyn D. Lovelace, age 74, of Brewton, Ala., passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020. She was born to Charlie and Minnie Lee Lovelace in Brewton. She was a member of Zion Fountain A.M.E. Zion Church. She was employed at Brewton Enterprise for many years. She enjoyed cooking but most of all she loved helping people in any way she knew how. Her heart was so big she touched everyone’s life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry D. Lovelace.

She is survived by her daughter, Leah D. Nolan of Atlanta, Ga.; sons, Patrick O. Lovelace and Fabion L. Lovelace (Jennifer McDonald), all of Brewton and Jeffery Redmon of Montgomery, Ala.; brothers, Charles (Sophia) Berry, Junior Lovelace, both of Andalusia, Ala., Tim (Melissa) Berry of Brewton; one sister, Tracey (Albert) Berry of Andalusia and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jemetha A. Ballard

Mrs. Jemetha A. Ballard, age 62, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Friday, July 17, 2020. She was born in McCullough, Ala. to Lillie Bell Lee and Johnny Crenshaw, Sr. She was a 1976 graduate of Escambia County Training School. She was employed at Vanity Fair until her retirement. She was a member of holy Community Center of Atmore. She enjoyed sewing the the home shopping network.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Ballard; parents; sister, Emma Lee, Lillie Mac Lee, Elizabeth Crenshaw, Alberta Johnson and Vincy Brown; brothers, Rufus Anderson and Larry Anderson; mother-in-law, Rosemary Ballard; father-in-law, Wilmer Ballard and sister-in-law, Peggy Ballard.

Doris Jean Johnson

Ms. Doris Jean Johnson, age 71, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Monday, July 20, 2020. She was born to Jimmie L. Johnson and Beatrice Johnson in Atmore. She was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and attended faithfully until unavoidable circumstanc4es would not all her.

She was preceded in death by her father; sisters, Willie Mae and Carolyn J. Riley; one brother, Willie James Johnson.

Ms. Johnson is survived by her mother, Beatrice Johnson; three sisters, Bessie Mae Johnson and Annie August, both of Atmore and Cathy Norris of Fayettebville, N.C.; three brothers, Lee Johnson of Sunset, Utah, Wilbert “Cookie” Johnson and Pastor Charles E. Johnson, both of Atmore; one aunt, Vera Boggan; devoted family member, Ms. Betty Hines and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Monroe Tucker, Jr., presiding and Pastor Charles E. Johnson, officiating eulogist.

Pastor Peggy Ann Jones, age 66, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Saturday, July 25, 2020, She was born to Eddie Johnson, Sr. and Sarah Lee Johnson in Atmore.  She was a graduate of Escambia County Training School. She was a member of “Saints With A Vision” and was founder of “SWAV Male Chorus Group”, The Silver Tone Wong Backs which birthed a young men’s chorus “The Baby Backs”. She founded Peace and Love holiness Church in 2016. She was employed with the Alabama Department of Corrections (Holman) until retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Roosevelt Johnson, Sr. Robert Johnson, Willie James Johnson and two sisters, Essie Johnson and Katie Lee Rudolph.

Pastor Jones is survived by her husband, Minister Vincent Edward Jones; two sons, Shelton (Lashonda) Forney and Edric Forney, both of Atmore; one step-daughter, Marlena King of Mobile, Ala.; brothers, Willie Bruce Johnson, Eddie Johnson, Jr. and Jerry Johnson; thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild; devoted and supporting friend, Adonis M. Williams and a host on nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Graveside services were held Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery with Apostle Craig Mims officiating.

Pallbearers and floral attendants were family and friends. Christian Memorial Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.

James “Jimmy” Milton Campbell

Mr. James “Jimmy” Milton Campbell, age 61, of Poarch, Ala., passed away Saturday, August 1, 2020. He was born to the late James and Mary Cooper Campbell. He was an avid Alabama football fan. He served in the United States Navy and was a brick mason most of his life. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Campbell and Mary Cooper Campbell Wallace; his stepfather, Melville Buck Wallace; great-grandson, Kayson Blackwell and his niece, Holly Johnson.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Wanda Jackson of Poarch, Ala.; four daughters, Nicki Moorehead of Meridian, Miss., Chris (Carlton) Shepard of Little Rock, Miss., Melissa Campbell of Daphne, Ala. and Rebecca Campbell of Mo.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Robert Campbell of Clarksville, Ohio and John Campbell (Amy Wilkin) of Lynchburg, Ohio; three sisters, Stella (Markie) Anderson of Peebles, Ohio, Mary Johnson (Butch Lightle) of Sabina, Ohio and Sara (Eric) Hubbard of Martinsville, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Friday, August 7, 2020 at 11 a.m. at New Home Cemetery in Poarch with Bro. Ricky Tedder officiating.

Mrs. Amelia Ethel Powers – Brooks, age 89, of Atmore, Ala., Passed away Saturday, August 1, 2019 at her residence. She was a native of Escambia County, Ala.,

she was the matriarch of her family. She worked for many years at Atmore Community (Greenlawn) Hospital as a dietician. She was devoted and faithful member of Saints with Vision A.F.M (formerly St. Paul A.F.M) Church of God where she was a church mother and missionary. She loved her family dearly and loved to cook. She was a lady of faith and a praying lady who gave Godly advice to whoever she encountered.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Brooks, Sr., three sons, Sam Grant, Charles Grant, Sr., and Jerry Grant; one daughter, Donnell Brooks; her parents, Mary and Elvin Powell; all of her sisters, Elvie Lee Powers-Savage, Marguerite Powers-Kelly, Mary Lee Powers-Nelson, Elder Minnie Lou Powers-Frye, and Paulene Powers-America; all of her brothers, Zachary “Zach” Powers, David Lee “Bo” Powers, John “Johnny” Powers, Maurice Powers, and Eddie Lee “Sonny” Powers; granddaughters, Shantelle Grant and LaTasha Grant; a grandson, Charles Grant, Jr. and great-grandson, Erik A. Grant.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (James) Carpenter of Detroit, Mich.; a granddaughter/daughter, Lakeitsha Brooks of Detroit; a son, Jeffery Brooks of Atmore; a grandson/son, Derrick (Tracie) Brooks and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and Saints with a vision Church Family; two caregivers, Marilyn Sharp and Gloria Robinson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2020 at 11 a.m. on the grounds of Saints with a Vision A.F.M Church of God, 232 Carver Avenue, Atmore with Bishop Donnice Brown officiating. Interment will follow in

Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 7, 2020 from 2 – 5 p.m. at funeral home.
