A fugitive murder suspect was shot and killed Wednesday (May 20) in Atmore while Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were trying to take him into custody.
James E. Jewell, Special Agent in Charge for the FBI’s Mobile Division, said during a brief Wednesday night press conference at Atmore City Hall that Tobby Wiggins, age not provided, was “during the course of the law enforcement action …shot and killed by FBI special agents.”
Wiggins was wanted for a first-degree murder that happened May 15 in Mecklenburg County, N.C. and had reportedly fled to Atmore to hide from authorities.
Once it was determined that the murder suspect had left North Carolina, a federal warrant was issued charging Wiggins with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. FBI agents determined where the suspect was staying and tried to arrest him, triggering the incident.
Jewell said a “positive fingerprint match” has been made, confirming that the person who was shot is, indeed, the fugitive.
