Roderick Lynn “Thumper” Watkins, Jr. 

Watkins

Mr. Roderick Lynn “Thumper” Watkins, Jr., age 23, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 as a result of a homicide at his residence. He was a native of Atmore and affectionately known as “Thumper” to his family and friends. He was a 2015 graduate of Escambia County High School. He had recently been employed with Swift Lumber Co. as a machine operator.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, David, Jr. and Zadie Brooks and John, Jr. and Veola Watkins.

Mr. Watkins is survived by his mother, Debra Brooks of Atmore; father, Roderick Lynn Watkins, Sr. of Atmore; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Gaines Chapel AME Church with Rev. Amos Smith, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery Turner Funeral Chapel in charge of all arrangements.

 

Charles Henderson Caraway

Mr. Charles Henderson Caraway, age 86, of McCullough, Ala., passed away Thursday, September 26, 2019 at his residence. He was retired from Brookley Field in Jet Engine Repair. He was born in McCullough to the late James William and Sandie Armenthy Caraway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Irene Caraway Moore.

Mr. Caraway is survived by his wife, Bobbie Louise Hayles Caraway of McCullough; brother,
James H. Caraway of Atmore; sister: Patricia Caraway (Bob) Renfroe of Dothan, Ala.; seven nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 30, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. from McCullough Christian Center with Bro. Jeremy Jones officiating. Interment followed in Judson Cemetery.

The family received friends Monday, September 30, 2019 from 10:30 until service time at 11:30 a.m. at McCullough Christian Center.

Joe “Cowboy” Hall    

Hall

Mr. Joe “Cowboy” Hall, age 67, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in Pensacola, Fla. He went home to be with the Lord after battling health issues for the last few weeks. Joe was an encouraging man who loved the Lord very much. He was a great example of a servant of Jesus.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service Saturday, October 19, 2019, 11 a.m. at Grace Fellowship.
A meal will be served after the service.

William Jackson (Jack) Edwards III

Mr. William Jackson (Jack) Edwards III, of Fairhope, Ala., age 91, passed away Friday, September 27, 2019 from pancreatic cancer. He was born in Birmingham, Ala. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and earned both his bachelor’s degree and law degree from the University of Alabama. He was president of the Student Government Association and Kappa Alpha fraternity and in later years, served several years on the University’s Board of Trustees, holding the office of President Pro Tem at the time of his retirement from the board. He served in Congress from 1965-1985 and after retirement he joined the Hand Arendall law firm in Mobile and continued to perform public service in Alabama and the nation.  He was president of many organizations and was named Mobilian of the Year in 1987. He also served on the Washington Airport Authority and on the corporate boards for Northrup-Grumman, QMS, Inc. and the Southern Company.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Fairhope, with a reception following in the parish hall.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m.

Cynthia Gardner Mount

Mrs. Cynthia Gardner Mount, age 50, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019 at her home in Mobile, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Sallie Gardner; brothers, Bobby and David Gardner and additional family members, Noah and Wesley McGee, Homer and Willie Mae Gardner, G.C. and Val Nobles and Bryston Gardner.

Mrs. Mount is survived by her husband of twenty-one years, Patrick Mount and their children, Kaitlyn (Bryan) Blow, Mariah (Thomas) Jones, Taylor Mount, Hunter Mount and one special pup, Katie, all of Mobile; her brothers, Wesley (Brenda) Gardner of Poarch, Ala., Richard (Belinda) Gardner and George (Shari) Gardner, all of Mobile and Ralph (Carla) Gardner of Atmore, Ala.; lifelong friend Lana Sharpe and additional family including Jean Gonzales, Margaret Mount, Linda Davis, Charlotte Schwartz, Mitch (Tabitha) Mount, and Kristina Kitchens and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Kindred Hospice Chaplain Ann Dowdle officiating. Burial will follow at New Home Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will follow at New Home Cemetery.

Walter Johnson, Jr.

Mr. Walter “Tubie” Johnson, Jr., age 60, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019. He was born in Atmore, Ala. He was a graduate of Rock Island High School, Rock Island, Ill. He was employed with John Deere. He married Cynthia Collins and one son, Walter Johnson, II was born and then one granddaughter. He was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church, Rock Island and after relocating to Atmore he continued his Christian experience with new Order Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Emanuel Faith Center.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his parents Walter and Johnnie Mae Johnson, Sr. of Atmore; brother, Bruce Johnson and sister Kim Lorraine; maternal aunts, Lucy Roberts, Annie Miller, Carolyn Scott, Sara Grant and Lucille Wiggins; uncles, Robert Ankum and Mikey Ankum; paternal aunts, Lillie Mae Charles, Deloise Cartwell and uncle Ledell Johnson; devoted friends, Barny Hudson, John and Ronnie and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11 a.m. Emanuel’s Faith Center with Bishop Wayne and Elect Lady Rhonda Johnson, Pastor and Elder Ledell and Sister Bridget Johnson, Assistant Pastor officiating. Interment followed in Stallworth Cemetery

Gilbert Williams

Mr. Gilbert Williams, native of Atmore, Ala., passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Christian Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Rabb Cemetery.

Clarence Brown

Mr. Clarence Brown, age 79, of Atmore, Ala., passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019 at his home.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 4, 2019, from 3 until 6 p.m. at Christian Memorial Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Empowerment Christian Center.

Allie Mae Wearren Sexton
Mrs. Allie Mae Sexton, age 87, passed away Friday, September 27, 2019 in Century, Fla. After her husband retired from a service career they settled in Bratt, Fla. She worked as bookkeeper, tax preparer and secretary. She and her husband, Jim, owned Bratt Trucking for several years. She loved working in her garden and crocheting. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s she had resided at Century Care Center Nursing Home since 2009. She never forgot her family and friends and would always say I Love You More.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James (Jim) Franklin Sexton; her parents, Oscar and Lennie (Miles) Wearren; sisters Georgia Lowell, Juliaette Hanks, infant sister; brothers James (Frank) Wearren, Pellar Lee Wearren, and Hollis Wearren.
Mrs. Sexton is survived by her daughters, Linda Jackson of Atmore, Diane Lambert of Severn, Md.; sister, Doris Vivian Brown of Pensacola, Fla.; four grandchildren, Rhonda (Dale) Solaas, Charles (Teresa) Waters, Kelli (CJ) Jackson, John (Niki) Lambert; ten great-grandchildren especially Vickie (Robert) Burmudez, and Bethany Ann Jones for volunteering at Century Care Nursing Home spending time with their granny and helping other residents; four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 4, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Cary Hanks officiating. Burial will follow at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Charles Waters, Dale Solaas, Charlie Waters, Robert Burmudez, Steve Hanks and Gregory Wearren.

Annie Jean Fountain

Miss Annie Jean Fountain, age 68, of Atmore, Ala. passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019. She was born in McKinnon Ville, Fla. to D.L. and Johnnie Mae Fountain. She was a 1967 graduate of Escambia County Training School in Atmore. She was a faithful member of Mt. Gillead Missionary Baptist Church. She was employed with Vanity Fair Mills and later with Flowerwood Nursery. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with family.

Miss Fountain is survived by two daughters, Sheneilia (Pastor Tyrone) Hartley and Kim Fountain; seven grandchildren, Antonio Hartley, Tyler Nero of Raleigh, N.C., Anna Hartley, Aimee Hartley, Marquez Gaines, Makayla Gaines, Breona Gaines; two great-grandchildren, Raelynn Hartley and Ry’Anne Hartley; three sisters, Edna Black, Louise Johnson and Carolyn Carter, all of Atmore and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Mt. Gillead Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Bryant, host Pastor and Pastor Danny Fountain, officiating Eulogist. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tyler Nero, Antonio Hartley, Nicholas Johnson, Marquez Gaines, Deontae Stots and O’Shea Fountain.

Flower bearers were her nieces and great-nieces.
