Special to Atmore News

The Atmore Lions Club was called to order by President Lion Joyce Petty on April 2, in the Mayson Auditorium at Atmore Community Hospital. Lion Joyce led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and gave the prayer. Beth Baranski was introduced as a visitor. Lion Joyce announced that the golf tournament has netted $10,000.75 as of this date.
The state Lions Club convention will be April 24-27 in Montgomery with Lions Joyce Petty and Bub Gideons scheduled to attend. Sign-up sheets to sell brooms and mops at the Lions Club booth at Mayfest were passed around.
Lion Joyce introduced Beth Baranski who is in Atmore from Galena, Illinois, to do research on the old Escambia County High School building with hopes it can be put on the National Historic Register. Baranski explained the work she and a small group of people are doing in the building with hopes of accomplishing that designation. Hopefully, if successful, it will open doors to funding and give recognition to the building. The group is totally mapping out the two floors of the building and trying to tie down some of the building’s history. After the meeting was adjourned, Lion Nancy Karrick took Baranski on a tour of Atmore and included some of the most historic buildings and sites in town, pointing out where the old school was located in the past. She also did a tour of the old school and told where certain classes were held.
The meeting closed with an upbeat feeling about the possibilities of the old school which Atmore Lions renovated once before. Let’s hope the people in Atmore will step up and help make the project a success.
